These kids had a story in the Nov/Dec issue of the Western Sportsman (hopefully I can say that) They had a 28.45, 33.3 pounder then, what a huge fish thanks for the photo's.

They do something to the eggs at the hatchery so that instead of 2 chromosomes, the fish have 3. This makes them sterile, and instead of putting energy into reproductive structures/hormones/behaviors, the fish direct that energy into growth.

Guys on the BC fishing board are saying there's been a few 50+ lbers from interior BC, but no proof... I'd like to know what the official proved record is too.

I think this fish is so big because of all the poos from myself and every other southern albertan which eventually end up in Dief :lol:

Sal, I'm such a freakin' cynic by times, but that fish looks like something you'd see in the WWF! Just doesn't look natural, more like 'Blinkey' from the Simpsons! IMHO

The fish are triploids. Many are escapees from the fish farm in the area. I believe the old rainbow record was around 42lb, a steelhead

Here's a few more facts:

Weight 43.6 pounds
Length 38.5 inches
Girth 34 inches
Old record - 42.3 pounds, Alaska, 1970
Caught from shore on a Mepps cyclops spoon.

The "fishing geeks" as they are known say they have caught and released 200 rainbows over 20 pounds and 12 over 30 pounds during the last two years.

As you may have seen, I started a post about this fish before I seen this one.
A guy I work with told me about it. His Brother fishes there all the time. He told be that there are some HUGE BOWS in there, but I didnt believe him. Well now I guess I look like the JackA**.

Man that thing is massive. I think I am going to make a trip this summer.

To answer some of your questions about steelhead and triploid and world record status. I already talked to the world record coordinator about our fishing and the possibility of being triploid rainbow and she told me their will be no changes to the rules, Every rainbow in igfa books is either a steelhead or most likely triploid. So yes this will 99.9% become the new all tackle World record and the largest rainbow ever recorded caught by and angler from line.

Good for them and congrats on the fish, but I for one am NOT comfortable with a genetically altered fish being the new WORLD Record without at least a footnote. Nothing against the fishermen or the fish.

A giant freak of nature is one thing.....a man-made giant freak of nature is another. IMHO

I always thought the only difference is that steelhead are sea run fish, and rainbows are the landlocked brothers???? But not a coastal raised guy and dont really know myself. So really good question. Now im curious too.

The only difference is that yes, the steelhead is an ocean going rainbow trout that returns to the ocean after spawning. The ones that i fish for in the seymour river seem to have adapted to this powerful river by having extra lean bodies with a big tail. Have a pic if interested...
