Rock Island Lake Depth Chart

Hey folks

Heading upto Calling/ Rock Island Lake here soon. Just wondering if one has a bathymetry or depth chart they could share or point me in the right direction to obtain one? I will try the MD of Opportunity as well later this week.

I've never seen one and with the Calling Lake camp ground closed AGAIN, we are planning to spend some time at Rock Island and figure it out.

I have heard that Rock Island lake has some pretty shallow under water rock piles or ridges. I know when I snowmobiled across it we seen a "ridge" of rocks protruding out of the ice away from the shore.


I'm sure you will get your info shortly from those who fish both regularly.

It been buried deeper and deeper on the gov't of alberta website over the years, but there is bathymetric maps for many lakes in alberta in pdf. You'll have to navigate though a bunch of menus to download a zip file:

You're aware there's no take home in Rock Island Lake right?

I've only fished it once and I didn't own the boat so we ended up in a flat area anchored and casting. I didn't even bother putting a hook on and sat and enjoyed a good cigar instead. The two fellows I was with never got a single bite.

I'm told you head to the east side of the lake where the rock island (rocks sticking out of the water) is and fish around there.

I fish rock Island lake about once a year. I only go if I can't get on Calling lake due to wind. Fish the whole west shore for pike, fish around the islands for walleye. We went the third weekend of July and never caught a single pike, but did get three walleye around the islands. We were the only boat on the lake. It never was much of a strong fishery, and even the natives don't net it much. They tell me they can get whites in winter, but the odd big pike rip their nets too often. We go sledding up their evey winter (wolf hunting) and we have yet to see an ice fisherman on the lake, and almost no evidence of them either. The F&G say it just doesn't produce a lot of fish and as the natives say, never has. I guess thats one reason they never had much for settlement there and no land claims now. It does however have a very nice campground if you are self contained and you can get a spot on any long weekend of the year. No beach, or shore line (water always right up to the willows) for that matter, so not a good draw for families.

Nice! Almost forgot about that old gem. Mine is beat up and the cover is off. Says it is the special edition and has 203 lakes. Rock Island is on page 163. Thanks for the reminder.

There, I fixed it for you.

There is a new system for subsistence non regulated netters where they are kind of restricted to their area and lakes. There is a period of time where any of the subsistence non regulated netters can then go to any lake outside their area to set nets.

At Rock Island, that has been the May Long Weekend.

Years past we would go to Rock Island only to see as many as 26 nets set. The big Pike, the big Whitefish (they were jumbos at one time) and the big walleye were quickly cleaned out.

But yeah, it once had big jacks.
