Reel line replacement

For coastal gear, how long between new line ?
A few of my reels have mono, and yes, will be replacing the line now.
But I have braid on my Hali ugly stix reels that is a few yrs old, or more.

What do u guys do for braid replacement time?

Once my reel is braid loaded, I will use it for 2-3 years. After that I will strip the line off the reel in a organized manor.

I will take the use end of the line and begin re-spooling my reel with the used end going on first.

This seems to provide me with an additional 2-3 years without cost.

This is just me, I wonder what others do?

I do the same, gray beard! The bottom spool line has never seen daylight so why not use it! Then I’m good for 6 years or so! I paid like $45+ for my Power Pro Spectra Braid so I want to get my monies worth! :)

My favorite is power pro ............ high vis for frolling, or super slick for casting.

I am still fishing the original Spider Wire, has to be over twenty years old and another old braided line with a core to keep it round, it is over twenty years old as well. Still can't break them, but man are they nice and soft.

Me too. Original spider wire on a number of spools and reels. Heck still have 4-6 300yd spools of the original spiderwire. Stuff lasts longer then I thought it ever would. Still have some mono lines bought long ago (stored in cool dark places) that I wouldnt worry about using(but would probably not use in a tournament though):).

Wow, not ashamed to say how old my spool is now, ha.
I’d say 7-8 years or so.
The reverse re-spool sounds like a good plan.

Just test it with a scale. It’ll start breaking at lower poundage as it fatigues. I had a couple reels full in Alberta start to fail around the ten year mark. I haven’t worn any out here in the coast. The pink line on the reel in the pic had that line on there when I bought it and he told me it was over five years old. Still tests good so I’m running it. This winter I put it on a new reel so it swapped ends but last March I had a wahoo all but spool me, he took over 800m on the first run at 30lbs of drag so it was certainly tested and took the strain.

Personally I prefer the J braid or suffix to anything else and always with a 60-100m mono top shot.

Gotta stock up on some gear from here.
Not necessarily this cheaper stuff, but the prices do seem good here.

There are many things to like about braided line… the braided line can stay on a reel for years without losing any performance. There are two
main resion that we are going to change or replace the braided line 1st one is The line is frayed and 2and is You don’t have enough line left on your spool
Make sure that your rods and reels are chip, debris, and corrosion-free to reduce the chances of your line getting frayed.

I am using Power Pro Spectra braid 20 lb test (HI-VIS Yellow) on my 2 bait casting reels & Power Pro V2 10 lb test (Hi-Vis Aqua) on my light spin-casting reels. I am very impressed with it’s strength, castability & sensitivity! Another great Shimano product! :sHa_shakeshout:

I do the same, I reverse the old line onto my Ice fishing reels..

Depending on how much you use the line, and how much exposure to UV light it has endured. Fluorocarbon is resistant to UV radiation, and doesn't break down the same way as mono or braid when exposed to sunlight.

Colored braid is great, as it changes color as it wears out and requires replacement.

For salt, the best line is Berkley ProSpec Premium Saltwater Braid:

Freshwater, Berkley x5 & x9 braid is a relatively new line for Berkley, and is much better priced than other braids:

I use x5 on my trolling gear, and x9 on my casting setups - both spinning and baitcasting.

I had guide in Kitimat. I asked him same question. He said for Braid line, he goes 10+ years. Remarkable line. Never even uses a leader, we were on the coho all day.

My trolling reel rarely gets attention although it has lead core line with a flurocarbon leader. On the other hand I change my baitcasting line (braided) at least once a year and am continually stripping line to get rid of the worn (casting section). I fish exclusively in Northern Sask and between the rocks, reeds and the Lakers rolling, the line takes a beating. I use to lose many lures and fish being lazy and not stripping off line. Once the reel gets low on line I change it out completely.

I use power pro everything and change every year. Too scared of losing a fish of a lifetime. Lol mind you this year I fished 4-6 days a week for 12 hours a day.... probably go longer but I can’t bring myself to use last years line. Just can’t.

Mono gets swapped every second season, braid every three seasons for me unless the reel sees alot of use in which case it's every season. I lost too many fish early in my fishing career to use old line. It's cheap insurance comparatively speaking too so not a big deal imho.
