Has anyone been catching any whitefish in Crawling Valley? This is one fish I have never caught but would like to. We saw lots of them as youngsters at McGregor when we were waterskiing. How do you catch these things? I won't tell anyone's secrets....promise.;)

I will let you in on the first secret. don't go to cvr for white fish, there is none there. McGregor is a good place to start. wait until first ice, and fish where there are other fishermen. get as close as you can to them. even to the point where the other guy can't get his ice shack door open, because you are so close to him. use small wire worms, or other real small lures. if you can't see the fish, move until you can see them

good luck, have fun.

maybe at the super store,

it is difficult to catch them in summer. we tried early in the spring we seen some in about 4 ft of water, it was fun to see them chase the hook but no hits

if its legal to use gammus (freshwater) shrimp, net some and hang them on a tiny hook under a small bobber

We used to carch them all the time at Chin with leeches on smaller size jigs. We did not target them but always caught them when we were not looking for them.

Wireworm under a slip-bobber can do the trick when you aren't allowed to use live bait.

get a small gold Kastmaster or small swedish pimple. Get a slip bobber. Set the bottom so the lure is about 6 inches off bottom. Get on a sandy bottom on a windy day in 8 - 10 feet of water. YANK on the line, and let it fall back down to vertical (vertical jigging off a slip bobber). the Kastmaster will flutter down after the pull, and can be worked slowly back to the boat. Most hits are as the Kastmaster flutters down. the whites are feeding in August on the sand flats on minnows and small perch. Big whites love this set up. the windier the better. Works great in October as well.
