Pike Tipups rigs

How does everyone rig their baits for pike on tipups? Does anyone have any instructions or know anywhere to buy pre-made quick strike rigs or rigs with circle hooks?

I use the Northland Predator Rig with Herring. Never had an issue. I try to get the bait to sit as level as possible.

Usually make my own with heavy flouro leader and think I notice more hookups. I let the middle hook slide on some and some I leave it adjustable like the Northland style but I’ve been preferring the sliding ones lately. After a few good sized pike they have to be checked over well though for fraying.

I almost always hang my bait nose down.

If you plan on fishing pike alot, I would consider making your own quickstrike rig. Get yourself some 80lb fluoro, crimps, good swivels and good trebles (I usually use #4s). you can choose to put spinners on them if you choose. Long run it is cheaper.

I have never heard this one before and always tried to rig mine so they look like a suspended fish

I usually make my own quick strike rigs. I've also made them with a treble or circle hook and attach a pre-made trailer hook like the VMC Quick Strike Trailer.

Take a 2 litre pop bottle with a lip on it.

Wrap a bunch of 20 lb braid around the bottle.

Tie mono leader and a piece of wirebite tied to two snelled hooks

Add a little dry sand in the pop bottle for stability. Keep lid on.

Bait hooks with smelt.

Drop hooks down the hole to desired depth.

Let enough line out to place the bottle 10-20 feet from hole.

Stand around and when a bottle starts bouncing towards a hole...pounce...set the hook and hand line in the pike.

Cost for 2 tip ups... about $8... but you get to drink the pop beforehand.

You will catch the most pike if you set the smelt so that the tail is painted up at a sharp angle and the head is resting on the bottom.

Circle hook rigs are the way to go for pike imo. Easy hookup and dont need jaw spreaders because the hook is in the corner of the mouth.

I use a herring and find a clean bottom and lay it on its side on the bottom off Of a point on a bay, I start at 2 feet of water and work my way deeper

If you want pre made quick strike rigs....look up Larry's Lucky Leaders on Facebook. He's in the saskatoon area and you will be hard pressed to find higher quality rigs anywhere for the price. The northland rigs are ok at best but I usually can't make more than a full day on one rig if the big girls are hitting hard. Cheap hooks that bend and snap and poor crimps and wire that pull apart.
I'm slowly making the transition from treble hooks to circle hooks as well. It is a small learning curve but the amount of deeply hooked fish is way way less....and there are other benefits as well like not getting the free end of your quick strike (if there happens to be one) stuck on the bottom of the hole.
I use the biggest hearing I can find (8-10") and sometimes even whole sucker in that 12-14" range. I've played around with how I rig the bait and nothing seems to beat a horizontal natural presentation. Most times I'm 6-12" off bottom....but some situations require higher....and sometimes right on bottom works.

Do you guys who use circle hooks let them free swing on crimped connections or snell them? I've read that snelling a straight eye circle hook with the line exiting the eye on the hook point side encourages the hook to turn more, increasing hookups. Be interested in your feedback.

I just attached the hook to a 12" titanium leader, hook the herring through the middle of the back, Pike don't care! Earlier in the year (like now) I put it pretty high in the water column, Feburary and on I lay it on the bottom...I use I Fish Pros so after a minute or so drop the bail on the reel and let the hook do it's thing, almost always in the corner of the mouth!
