Is a sablefish actually quite special? I am quite proud of this catch even though I couldn’t identify him till after. Also no fight in him since he was small haha.

Not common to catch but there is people who do target sablefish with rod and reel even adult ones. Most don’t because of the depths they are often found at. According to the guy I met on the island that targeted sable they taste awesome and kinda buttery. Never caught one myself though

Delicious they are. One of the best eating fish you can find in my opinion. Also known as Black Cod. I have ate it at fine dining restaurants around N.A. and never disappoints. It’s one of my faves right behind Jumbo Perch/walleye and Halibut. Nice catch!

Sablefish are infrequently caught when fishing Halibut. We experienced a few incidental catches while fishing the outer Banks off the WC of Van Island A real delicacy IMO .

When pulling traps throw you buoy over the side and your rope to prevent tangles in your yak with the crabs.
