Just checking into how things are at Pigeon? Anyone catching anything? Was out last weekend and had no luck.

I've seen a few tents out there... just wondering if anyone is into whites yet?

I hope to have better results this Sunday when I head back.

I have been to silver beach 3 times lately (not yesterday though) and tried all depths from 5' to 21' and haven't seen a single fish yet. Nobody that I talked to saw a fish either, or so they said. The ice was thick everywhere that I drilled, averaging 13". I'm surprised nobody was driving on with vehicles yet although there was a bit of floodwater at the boat launch on Sunday.

Brutal.
That lake stumps me.
In the summer it seems wherever I go and drop my jig and minnow down, I’m on fish , literally catch 100 a day in one spot.
In winter I’ve had days of seeing one or two fish.
Definitely more of a summer lake for me anyway.

I have not ice fished pigeon for years , until this year so I am going to figure it out by trying different places around the lake , going to try a mid lake gravel bar today ,
I have been looking for these big whites but only have seen one so far.
no one I have talked to on the ice has been doing well .

we have fished Grandview 3 or 4 times this winter did ok for walleyes closer to the point .
drilled a lot of holes from 5 to 22 feet . to find the fish, one spot looked like zebra mussels on the bottom did not have the camera to see close up what they were but a real think mat of them .

Just a heads up, I’m starting to see more 1/2 tons driving on the ice. In most spots I’m seeing 14”-16” of ice but I was out deep this morning and found the thickness varied in a few spots.... it was only 8”-9”.... keep your heads up.
And to the guys ripping towards shore going 70-80km/hr in the pickup.... stay the hell away from anyone fishing. The ice is really cracked up in a lot of spots this year & looks worse than many previous years so far. It won’t take much of screwup to cost you $$$.

Also where did you find 8-9? Has to be along shore I’m guessing. From Mulhurst to Silver beach and to Mameo its all 16 plus.

Doesn’t surprise me. Some jack bum was flying towards shore doing about 70-80kmh yesterday. Probably a decent wave under the ice.....

It was out in deep water but if I’ve seen a couple different spots like that ..... how much more of the lake has variable thickness?
It’s the worst looking ice in spots that I’ve seen in years (Broken, cracked and lots of little heaves) if we get any really ice growing weather I expect it will be interesting trying to get around the lake.
Not telling anyone what to do but I won’t be driving my 1/2 ton on anytime soon.
And if you choose to, please drive slowly. Be safe out there everyone.

I agree with the weird ice conditions. Usually there is one big heave out in the middle. This year I cross 2 heaves to get out to the middle from Mulhurst. I think the bad wind we had the one day really caused grief. Without snow cover I thought the ice would be in great shape. I’m getting tired of loading and unloading quad and sled every time but it gives ya piece of mind. I just wish I had the nerve to drive a 3/4 ton out first like some people. Other than ice the fishing has been good for me. Only weird thing is I haven’t even seen 1 pike.

This!

The ice is chipping out of the hole at some of the layers rather than fine shavings. Usually I do not see chippy ice until March. I real deep freeze should take care of it. Otherwise you can take a chance like a lot are doing - probably be fine...might not if you hit the wrong spot. I`m sticking with light travel - a pain loading and unloading but worth it.

I will keep loading and unloading my snowmobile for now. Ice is 15" plus all around Mulhurst/Silver Beach where I have been but it is not clear blue - lots of white layers in it.
I found some walleye on the 27th, caught 7 but it took all day. They were all around 48cm long.
Haven't seen a pike or whitefish there yet this ice season. It's been really slow for me but at least i filled by class B tags.

Went out to "my spot" for the afternoon/early evening. Found out it was no longer "my spot" lol.

Ice was 16" or so - until it wasn't.

When the bite started, I moved to a hole that a fellow vacated about 50 yards away from me (he was catching and I was not). The ice in that hole was maybe 9". He had his half ton and kids right there all day. It was tempting to drive on, but after seeing that, was glad I was on my snowmobile.

I have to agree with Snapfisher and penguin on this one.....the way the ice chips out and the white ice streaks, I will continue light travel with ATV. I as well will not be taking my truck out any time soon no matter how much of a pain the loading and unloading is.

As for people driving on, please slow down when driving on ice. Let’s keep the waves under the ice to a minimum to avoid a blowout

Unfortunately this is true I think. And it will only get worse now that more vehicles are out there. Everyone will thinks it’s fine, the more tracks they see. The number of trucks that seem to think 70km/hr is a safe enough speed is unreal. Guys might think it’s ballzy but as I’ve gotten older, that’s not the word that I’d use for it.
I’ll stick to the quad to get around until we get a really good cold snap. Lots of fresh cracks seen again today as we rolled back to the shore.

All vehicles that left from 3 on drove properly and didn’t race out. I also drove out to birdcrap island and there was a truck that was 400 yds further west than that. Ice Was fairly quiet driving off. No idea on ice on west or Sandholm side. Be safe.

Locals put up straw bales to mark the hole. It needs some time to freeze up. If you stay to the right of it going on to the lake it is fine.

Nope I was in the tent with a buddy walleye fishing with the camera down, I did have a jaw jacker 20 yards away with a couple wire worms on it. No dice though.
This was in 25’ of water, the whites were cruising what looked like about 8 feet off the bottom.
I always leave a jaw jacker out loaded with wire worms. No dice at pigeon though.
Thinking maybe at pigeon they need a little movement instead of dead sticking off a jaw jacker?

Those suspended ones in pigeon are tough...at least for me anyways. They just seem to cruise around with a glazed look on their face. If you can find them in 10 or less f.o.w over a little structure like a gravel bed or around some weeds and rocks, they seem a little more interested in feeding or at least approaching your offering. I know some guys get them deep out on pigeon.

I don't know about the movement on a JJ. I bought the jigging base it has caught me zero whites at Pigeon to date. 2 years I have tried it now. Seems I get more looks when it is still on the JJ, but, I do have a rod in had with WWs which I do move when something has an interest. Now the jigging base stays at home. You only get so many chances on these tight lipped whites.

It’s pretty rare that the Pigeon Whites like any Hook movement.
Any of the bites I’ve had this year were dead still on the JJ.

Had an Epic day today. The bite was on! Catching mainly 4-6 lbs fish but had 1 just a touch under 8lbs and even caught 1 that was only 12-13” long. Great to see the different age classes for this fishery. At least the Whitefish are doing well.

Epic alright! Congrats! This is the year hey :)

Interesting thing at the AEP sessions last week. They talked about the Pigeon of old and the small whites. They classified them as "skinny and starving" whites back then. As it became a better walleye fishery through stocking and the pike population was healthy...still a ways back, sound like that is when the whitefish started to change and to begin being thinned out - getting bigger.

Anyone I talk to about the old Pigeon seemed to think that was better and healthy to have the little whites. Easy to catch, etc. The bios say different. Too bad the audio is silenced as I would like to continue that discussion.

Today is a different place for sure. Hopefully it has hit that sweet spot now and we are seeing the golden years of whites there. It is a special lake for whites.

my son sent me a few pictures from this morning ,his smaller one is over 2 lbs and the bigger one over 6 lbs. he has put in a lot of hours figureing it out getting skunked . looks like it is a balanced year classes like the biologist say it is . not skinny fish that's for sure , fast growing lots of food , thus hard to catch

Yup, catching some tanks at just over 8lbs, average is between 4-6.5 lbs and some that are only 12-13” long ... great to see the different age classes again.

Well I can answer my own question. Mameo was drifted in pretty good. Grandview access is pretty easy. Headed a good mile out and found 20-23" of good hard ice everywhere I checked.
I didn't see or mark a single fish. Did not try for walleye. Typical pigeon. Hate this lake somedays lol.

I don’t remember these little whites at all. I have fished pigeon for 30years and pulled nets there for a few years a lot of years ago. And they where never small skinny whites. My brother caught a 9lb’er there 20yrs ago. 10 whites would over flow a 5gallon pail and you need two hands on it. That’s the years we used to throw boards onto the ice fishing into April.

Same experience. I've fished it since the early eighties. They averaged 2 lbs back then. Nobody I fished with had even heard about a wire worm. Wetaskiwins, Russia hooks, wedding bells and swedish jigs were most common.

I have no doubt that the netters my have caught a few bigger fish. There were a lot them

I’ve gone out 4 times previously to get skunked.
A beauty 23” at 28’ of water, fish was at 15’

I’ve never tried to target them in any of my outings but see them move through way on the top of the screen while fishing for walleye. But maybe I need to try for them at least once this season. Good luck to all that are trying for them.

Super slow at first. Not too many people out and most around us cleared out mid-afternoon (maybe they limited out? but we marked 1 fish all afternoon that looked at the bait for a minute and then wandered off, so I would think otherwise). Today was the worst day I’ve had fishing for walleye this year. On Saturday I seen a lot of fish moving but only caught 7. Today was set up for 5 hrs and I didn’t see 1 fish. The fishing calendar said a poor day but that was an understatement. What I would like to know where all the fish go that normally move thru the area. It’s weird that everyone all across the lake has the same luck/ sightings.

Tried Grandview Saturday a.m., saw 1 walleye between 2 of us. Moved to Sandholm for late afternoon/sunset, saw nothing. Went out again yesterday to Sandholm, same result - didn't see anything.
Talked to the RCMP on the ice making his rounds yesterday, said he had only heard of 6 fish being caught in his travels - that was around 3:00.

I would bet the reason a person isn't seeing many whites is because they are probably staying close to spawning burbot so they can suck up the burbot eggs. Can't remember who but a couple years ago someone posted a video of he took, of a big gang of whitefish following a spawning burbot over a sandy bottom.

Burbot eggs are copper colored so try copper.

This time of year Birdpoop island is one place where lingcod like to spawn. Late Feb and March was always good around the island. But I'm not telling where the island is on Pigeon. Some will know where I mean.

All depends on where you set up for the whites on Pigeon. The morning bite lately has slowed compared to the beginning of the month but it’s still been pretty decent.
As for the Burbot spawn, I remember hearing from the old boys back when I was a kid on how when they caught a Ling, they’d “shotgun” the hole by squirting the Ling eggs into the hole and go back the next day and slam the Whites. But some of those old boys did tell quite a few stories. Lol

Not Pigeon, but we were at Wabamun yesterday, was extremely slow as well. We moved around a bit, and only saw one small bored-looking walleye perusing my jig before swimming off...

We hit Wabamun this past Saturday as well and it was dead. Sounds like it was slow this past weekend on many lakes....

According to the fishing calendar last week and the start of this week are poor fishing days. Come the weekend it will be good.

Quick late afternoon/sunset fishing trip off Sandholm today ~14-18 FOW. 1 mark in the first hour, then at least a dozen marks between 5 and 6, then all quiet by 6:30. Lots and lots of looking and window shopping, but only managed to grind out 2 bites. No takers on the deadsticks.

Fish are there and rolling in at sunset, but it remains a tough bite.

The whites in pigeon aren’t on any special bite schedule. Earlier in the season yes you want to really focus on the mornings but as the days get longer and March is here you can catch them at any time of day if your fishing them deep. It all depends when the school role through your area. Tight lines everybody.

I feel bad for ya. There’s a lot of people out fishing for whites yet nobody wants to give ya any useful advice. I only fish for walleye but I’m guessing if you drove on at Sandholm and headed south and fished areas around where all people are set up that would be a starting point. Lots of threads on what people are using for hooks and set ups. Check out the Sylvan whitefish thread as that has a lot of great info on it. I understand people don’t want to give out their good locations but even if they showed you exactly where to fish doesn’t mean you will catch anything. Hope ya have better luck on your next outing.

Very true, but the early morning by far is the best time to go for them.

Man I haven’t seen the walleye bite this bad in a long time. Spent 12 hrs today near the island and only managed 4. Since it was so nice out decided to stay real late and take advantage of the late night bite-not even a mark on the flasher from 5-11 pm. I’ve fished 5 different areas of the lake in the last 3 weeks and have had little success in all the spots. Fished in 6-23 fow. Here’s hoping others have had better results in the last while.

Went to pigeon yesterday, fished out at Grandview and at the provincial park, didn’t see any fish or have any bites at both places. Access was good at crystal springs and the provincial park access wasn’t to bad, looked to be a decent amount of people out fishing but not many were catching. Still lots of ice on the lake but didn’t need a extension. RCMP were out to yesterday going from tent to tent doing checks. Still was a good day on the ice.

We were out at Grandview yesterday as well, drug the frame of my truck across the heave at shore. Some kind fellow with a chainsaw made the access a little more passable but you still might bottom out on it.

I wouldn't say the fishing was lights out but we managed to fill 5 class B tags. Pretty happy with that as one day is likely all we will be spending on Pigeon this year and RCMP mentioned that they weren't running in to many catching so feeling lucky.

Rattle baits and jaw jackers set with smaller p.k. flutter fish and a minnow hooked in the middle squeeked out a few for us. All fish came in 20-22'.

Yes that access looked a bit high so we accessed at crystal springs and it was better. Good to know they were biting on that. Congrats on filling your tags 👍

Noticed the ice friability is increasing my auger was cutting 10" holes at least 10-15% faster and far more prone to corkscrewing the last 4 inches as of Monday March 15th.

I’ve been driving my 1/2 ton on still the last few evenings. No issue with getting on at Mulhurst. Hardly anything for snow left so it’s slippery as all hell but still over 24” of ice inside the bay last night and over 30” out deeper on Friday.

Filled our tags off the PP today. Bite was better than it has been, but as usual lots of waiting around for the fish to show up until dusk. Ice is still thick, but water starting to pool on top in places and launch is getting a little rough. Most walked on but there was an SUV out.
