Have always used a jaw jacker but I'd like to try something different this season- what do you guys tend to use?

I like the frabill thermal and HT polar tip ups. Cheap, tough, compact and easy to set up. They outfish me often for pike and burbot. The insulated ones are nice on cold days but you can just use foam mats with a hole cut as well.

The HT big game is probably the sturdiest one but I don't believe they make an insulated one. If so, or if you wanted or glue some foam underneath, this would be a top choice

I fish pro or H.T. rigger, both use a fishing rod rather than bare handing it. Much prefer that over regular tip ups.

I have a HT Predator Pro which is insulated and sits over the hole. Much better than the standard ones as it keeps the snow and ice out. I guess it also depends on what you are fishing for. If I am going for trout I would prefer the jaw jacker but Tip up is great for pike, walleye etc.

Whatever you choose try and find the ones with a brass spool. The plastic ones break in the extreme cold.

I use these, they work incredibly well, and are super simple to set, and are super cheap. At under $4.00 a piece they can't be beat.

Not sure if the Automatic Fisherman is considered a tip up but I really like mine. I prefer to fight fish with a rod.

Tip ups are the best. Expensive but this is the best tip up around https://www.cabelas.ca/product/99363/beaver-dam-tip-up

That said I use the cheap ones all the time and never had a problem, however the beaver dam is the Cadillac of tip ups.

My favorite tip up is a 6 to 10 foot long willow or saskatoon pole with 6 inches of a small branch left on to hang a spool of line on. I split the tip of the pole and put the line in the split. Slide the line to set the depth. Quite sensitive and easy to see the bite too. Cost: 0

I've used the same !

I also have some lath I cut 1' long. One screw in the center & wrap line .....and each full un-wrap is 2' long.
Put in the hole so it is an X and you will see the hit etc. Bigger holes need the lath cut longer so it will not pull into the hole.

Berkley has released a new insulated tip up, which is just a hair over 10". Fits snugly in a 10" hole, and keeps the water from freezing up.

Best and cheapest ice fishing contraption is a 24" x 1.5" wooden dowel painted like a barber pole or one side red the other white that lies across the hole and spins as the pike wanders off with your bait.

I use dacron line with a leader wrapped on the stick with a quick strike rig or similar and they cost pennies to make ( I know: 'what's a penny?') A cradle of frozen slush helps keep it aligned over the hole. If you don't want to hand bomb your string you can grab the stick and take off running. :)

I give the ol'lady a bucket to sit on and tell her when the tip dips yank it up and yell....I will come out of the ice shack and take over.:)

I call it a titup.
