Boys first elk down boys!

Nice way to end 2020!

Hard hunt on a big herd on the move.

Had to boot it 2 km up and around the big hills..big gawd dang hills.

Stumbled on a mini herd wayy up in the rocks.... they saw us but we managed to get within 300 yards... my boy passed on the shot. Didn’t like it... I was huffin and puffin up to him.

Then the big herd started hauling hoof west and we were a km short of where I wanted us to be for the intercept. So we hauled ass through the snow and the forest.

Got busted by an initial group and we figured the jig was up. We kept cautiously kept moving to where we knew the herd was initially headed.

I hoped that we may be able to catch a straggler..... we got out into the last 200 yard open prairie... we fast crept along... then a cow chirped us.... cow n calf 250 yards away upwind of us.
We instantly dropped when we heard the chirp.... and mama essentially sure about us... so I used my mouth reed. Chirped a couple back.... she just grazed along checking us out ever so often....
they were 250 yards away just inside of the bush.... my boy figured the main group was just over the ridge ..... we heard more chirps... so we crouch walked as far as we could......

Then.... 6 elk heads staring at us. I freeze... flatten down... chirp twice back.
My boy belly crawls 50 yards.... sits up..... gun shoulders..... not shooting.

The 6 bust him and start quick trotting along....

I freeze em and turn em broadside with three loud calls...... then

BOOM!

Then all hell breaks loose..... hundreds of elk streaming by.
My boy’s is down.... I’m war whooping!!!

I only needed to haul out 1 quarter.
