We have been focusing on the pike fishing the past week but prior to that we had been chasing the trout. Our first outing was Xmas eve day. That day we only put in about 2.5 hours on the ice and went 4 for 4, 3 bows and a brookie on the jawjackers running tiny jigs with a mealworm. The next few outings we managed another dozen rainbows and one more brookie. Our biggest bow to date measured 24 3/4" and pulled the scale to 6lbs-11oz, our biggest brookie went 18" at an even 3.0lbs. Will likely shift focus back to the trout this week after chasing pike the past week. I'm starting to get rainbow withdrawals! Lol

I think you are the luckiest fisherman with all the pikes and trouts you caught. Great job.

Saskatchewan a few minutes from the AB border. I live in Loydminster on the AB side but I fish SK. The only fishing I do in AB is Cold Lake and since part of it is shared with SK and a SK license is good for fishing it I just buy a SK license. PM me if you want to join me. I usually fish alone most days.

SK has an agreement with AB that Alberta regs apply to the whole lake regardless of province of license.

Nice fish. The new reg changes there seems to be helping.

We were able to get out for a few hours this afternoon. The gf iced a beautiful kyped jaw male bow wearing it's spawning colours and when she held it up for a picture it started running milt. The fish was a real chunker! 19 3/4" and 5lb-1oz.

With the temps starting to finally get back into bearable range I hit the ice this morning for the first time in 16 days. It felt more like 16 years waiting to get after them again. This cold snap really produced some ice. I cut a measured 36" of ice compared to last trip at 22" but the Strikemaster ate through it like a hot knife through butter.
Things started off quiet after setting up the tent and lines. As the sun got higher I was able to see on the aquaview and shortly had a nice brookie followed a few seconds later by a rainbow cruise by. Fish cruised in and out of my camera view for about 5 minutes when I heard the jawjacker outside the tent spring loose. I jumped out the door and was rewarded with a rod tip bending down headed towards the water. A couple minutes later I had a small but chunky 1lb-13oz rainbow on the ice.
I reset the line and headed back to the tent to dry and warm my hands. Nothing happened for another 1 1/2 hrs except a bunch of fish cruising in to check out my minnow on the jigging jawjacker but they kept turning away. I moved the outside line to deeper water based on the direction of travel I was seeing the fish coming from and 1/2 hour later that line fired again. As I ran the rod bent over fully and drag started screaming. I thought I was into a decent rainbow. After a few short runs I had an 18" 3lb-8oz brookie on the ice, my PB to date!
I reset the line and again went back to the tent to dry my hands. After watching another couple trout come at the minnow then turn off of I decided to change to the wiggle wheel and use a mealworm. I sat back and waited. A few minutes later a chunky brookie swam up and went right on by, I reached down and turned on the jigging base and at the little tiny movement the brookie did a 180 coming in taking the jig and mealworm without hesitating and I enjoyed the show watching the trout get hit by the rod releasing. Two or three minutes later I had my third and final trout on the ice for a limit. A nice chunky beautifully coloured 17" 2lb-15oz brookie!
I wasn't even out long enough to eat my lunch! I packed up and headed home, ate my lunch on the drive home and cleaned my fish when I got home.

Nice brook trout. I'm heading out to continue my quest for a 10lb rainbow this season in the morning. I'm hoping the passing of this prolonged cold front gets the fish moving again. Your outing gives me hope. :happy0180:

Had a change of plans this morning. The gf and I were supposed to get after pike this weekend but she put her back out. The area I fish has no cel service and I didn't want to be out of cel range to duck out for a couple hours while she was sleeping. So I went back to my usual trout haunt. I arrived 1/2 hr before daybreak, punched holes in a new location, located the spot I wanted to put the tent and set up. As I was setting up the aquaview the jigging jawjacker next to me went off. I thought I must have hit it with my foot but when I turned to look the rod suddenly bent down. FISH ON!! A couple minutes later a chunky 2lb brook trout was laying on the ice. I reset the line. I finished setting up the aquaview in time to see a school of chunky brookies circling my jig. I grabbed my phone to video and as they moved off a rainbow moved in and I was able to video it inhaling the jig. FISH ON AGAIN! I landed the bow, it measured 18" and weighed 3lbs-3oz. After resetting I watched a few more brookies cruise by. Nothing hit over the next 1/2 hr and then I heard the jawjacker outside the tent fire. Fish # 3 was on. I iced a real pretty male bow that measured 18 3/4" @ 3lb-13oz. That was it, limited out by 9am! I packed up and headed home early to spend the day with the gf. I cleaned the fish and gave them to our neighbours as they love fish and can no longer fish as he has been struck with some disorder they cannot diagnose and has lost all feeling and mobility in his legs and innin a year has gone from being able to walk to being in a wheelchair. They sure looked happy with the bag of filets.
With it being so mild today we topped the day off by BBQ'n some venison burgers from her 2020 whitetail buck. What a great way to top off a couple days of great trout action.
