Been looking for a new caliber of rifle to buy. The 6.5-300 has me really intrigued.
Curious if it is enough gun to consistenlty hunt elk with? Anyone that has experience with id love to hear. Pros/Cons. do's/donts

Thank you

A good 6.5mm bullet is plenty for elk. The issue with the 6.5x300, is that the case is too large for the bore to gain much over the 6.5 Nosler. 7mm is about the smallest bore that is worthwhile with the 300wby case. I actually considered a 6.5 stw many years ago, but stayed with the 7mmstw.

Running the numbers through Quickload, the big 6.5 magnums are more than enough for elk and moose yes, but holy jeepers do they take a lot of coal to stoke the boiler!!!:budo:

Yup over bore for sure but no problem handling elk as far away as you can hit them, just make sure you choose a good bullet, running them that fast you need something that will hold together, barnes, accubond etc

Worked just fine on this one. That was with the factory 130 scirocco II as I was still waiting for dies at that time. Shooting accubonds now and I’d have now qualms taking the shot on an elk at any reasonable range.

A lot of the old best of the west and Gunwerks videos were filmed with just a 6.5x284

With a 6.5x300 wby you probably want to go with the heaviest and well constructed bullets you can get for elk

It's certainly enough to take any Elk or Moose at any reasonable distance.
One of the best rifles I ever had for that purpose was a 6.5x270 WSM with
140 Accubonds. Loved it and left it.

No issue killing stuff, at least as long as the barrel lasts. You will be re-barrelling somewhere between 800 and a 1000 rounds, similar to a 7 RUM. compared to the 3500 round life of a 7 rem mag or the 5000 of a 6.5x55 you have to ask if the extra speed is worth it. Personally I do think it is worth it but I consider barrels just part of the cost of shooting. 1000 rounds of hand loads still costs double what a barrel does.
