What do you do with 1800 pepper plants? LOL
I planted 24 pepper plants yesterday, Two different types, going to try some LED grow lights rather than rely on the sun through the garage's south window.
I'll do maybe 24 Tomato plants in a couple of weeks.
I make compost and work it in and last year I got a truck load of well rotted manure, Should be a good year

I'll admit I'm no gardner but I'm thinking of making a raised bed as well for potatoes.I have some good sized timbers 3ftx6ftx12in deep would that work for a few spuds for me and the wife?

Potatoes grow in the mounds or hills you create around the plant. The roots go down into the soil. So as long as you have dirt your good. No need for a raised bed for potatoes. They use up a lot of space. Save the raised beds for your root veggies.

Cold frame off the garlic yesterday. Average around 8 - 10 inches already.
Bulbils into the ground tomorrow.

Hauling soil and manure again today.

The rest will now follow swiftly...

Frig everything was going great being able to leave plants outside at night, all back inside again.Friggen cold.
Covered my onions and a couple tomato plants.Looks like 3 more nights of keeping stuff inside then I think will be ok.
Planting my root veggies on Sunday, hope for the best.

I planted everything a couple days ago, I've had this cold weather happen before and as long as nothing has sprouted, it should be fine. Thankfully held off on the flowers and tomatoes and my peppers I grow in pots so things should be okay. I few scraggly zuchinni plants I put in are covered but may have to reseed them.

I have my potatoes in the ground now for almost two weeks. Hopefully they won’t sprout to surface until after the frost and snow over the next two days.

I have planted green beans and a purple green bean. I have giant kohlrabi seeds in as well as carrots.

My butternut squash are in pots ready to in this weekend.

I scaled down my variety this year and planted only our most eaten veggies.

The kohlrabi was a huge favourite. I love them cleaned and cut up in the fridge for a cold snack on a hot day. Also fried or baked as a veggie with oil salt and pepper.

I sadly had my favourite ornamental dogwood shrub die over the winter. I am wondering what to plant.

I am think of something with large flowers that blooms a lot. Maybe I should just make it an annual pot of some kind.

My saskatoons had mummy berry disease last year. Hoping for better this year.

My currents seem to be struggling this spring. Poor foliage.

Looking good buddy! We put the whole garden in last Sunday. 47 hills of spuds, 1 row peas, 2 rows carrotts, Beets, cucumbers and dill. Tomotoes and peppers are in the greenhouse. Just bedding plants to put in when the cold snap buggers off.

I miss gardening. Used to put in a half acre garden to share with my folks.

Years ago I got a started pineapple plant that produced a pineapple. I was thinking of growing one on my balcony now. Thought I would pass on the info on how to. If you start now with the cut off green top of a pineapple you can have a full sized pineapple in one year. Would have to be potted so you take it in for the winter and keep it in a sunny window. More of a tasty novelty unless a person started more than one.

I might have to get the kids to try this. Thanks.

My garden...I've been slacking. 4 rows (100') of spuds in and some peas coming up. Not doing a massive garden this year.

I did find about 10 spinach plants that are all about 8" tall from a plant I let go to seed last year. Makes for some nice fresh greens, I didn't realize spinach could handle a heavy frost.

Yep, those are garlic scapes forming. On the first of June?? WTH??

They've topped four feet already, and have a nice average diameter:

But I've never even heard of scapes being developed this early, ever.
Methinks that signals we are in for a somewhat early harvest.

Tough luck. Happened to me last year. No frost in the forecast, but they got hammered the second night after I put them in. Luckily, I had a few left inside and my cousin hooked me up with a few of his spares.

We used to plant certain seeds in the fall after the temperature dropped enough that the seeds would not sprout. If they sprouted then they would die in the winter. I think we planted onion sets, garlic, peas. radish, carrots, turnip and I can`t remember what else. Similar to how wild plants work.

If you ph is good then you can add directly to soil, but not too much. Also keep it away from spuds, it promotes scab fungus.

Dont add ash from news paper burning - it has r3sidual chemicals you dont want in your soil.

Does anyone add anything to their soil after their potatoes have sprouted and /or when mounding them? I’d like to know if there is something that I should be doing to increase my harvest and/or increase the size of the potatoes. I grow mine in tires and only water once a week and mound them when it’s time.
Would adding blood meal to the soil that I use to mound them help accomplish that?

aulrich
06-23-2021, 03:50 PM
Isn't blood meal mostly nitrogen so it would help grow bigger tops but I don't know if that would translate to more potatoes or just bigger tops. But this is my first year of conventional gardening.

For me I rented a plot just out of town the potatos onions and beans are going ok, along with the cabbage and pumpkin I transplanted last week, but I probably lost one of the pumpkin.

None of my carrots beets or cucumbers sprouted so I have replanted them and I am making sure that I am out watering at least every second day especially with next week's heat.

In the yard it looks like I will get some haskap berries soon. I even got a berry or two on last years new additions.

I should get a reasonable amount of cherries but that cold snap may have messed the pollination so rather than having more than I can use I will get some for a batch or two of jam, but time will tell.

Most of the raspberries I planted last year did not return but the ones that did are already throwing suckers so another year or two for those.

I was pleasantly surprised by how many of my strawberries survived me pulling the landscape fabric out of the beds. Now without the fabric messing up the runners I should get the beds properly ground covered with strawberries.

This years grow of that other plant is going ok but the new pup has developed a hate on for one pot and keeps digging out the seedling from that one pot.

No,potatoes like all root vegetables like more P and K.Blood meal is 10-0-0 ish,you want more of a 5-10-10.Blood meal will also attract dogs/yotes to dig.

Bone meal would be a better choice, but organic means you fertilize for next year so maybe to late to get it to break down for this year. Some water soluble stuff would kick them into high gear the quickest.

It’s a fungus. Attacks blueberries, saskatoons etc.

Cause the berries to dry up on the plant. Like a dried mummy...

Ive not had mummy berry on any of my plants so im of no helo there. Hope it only happens rarely. Its a shape to lose any berries.
Ive had black leaf/witches broom on my wild saskatoon trees and am vigilant about cutting it out. I have also had juniper rust, believe we got it from arbourist wood chips, there aren't any juniper around me for miles, so im thinking it should just be the one year.

Between the rather mild winter and the last heat wave, our garlic was ready for harvest yesterday. Earliest it has ever been! I'm OK with that as we will now grow a crop of small turnips in the same bed and they'll have plenty of time to grow to full term.

You can see that the lower 3/4 of the plants have browned up in the following picture. The plants have shrunk by a foot and a half in size as they matured:

https://i.imgur.com/6y4JKvD.jpg

This is what I look for as to timing the harvest - only a few leaves still green right on top:

https://i.imgur.com/FxbPO8z.jpg

The bulbs were all well formed and we again realized a nice average size. Remember, these are all the product of last year's bulbil plantings - that experiment is paying off very well:

https://i.imgur.com/NvPiTUm.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/m0V0jgJ.jpg

Sorted, graded and hung up to cure (the window behind them gets shuttered so they do not see much light):

https://i.imgur.com/hDAXEAO.jpg

After having a 4 foot wall of green screening the BarBee / sitting area, it sure looks barren with only the Bubil producers and a couple of late volunteers:

https://i.imgur.com/ixd1b6z.jpg

Last year's Bubil crop, next year's seed, is doing rather well:

https://i.imgur.com/X8PtDxw.jpg

For the first time, we've got some zucchini on the go and those are doing well. I built some 8' long fence-mounted planter boxes in which we're growing climbers such as peas and beans, having them tight to the fence like that seems to do nicely. I've lined the planter boxes with landscape fabric that I've wrapped around some old chloroplast election signs and stapled in using stainless steel staples. I should be able to build about 4 more for another 36' of peas and beans, based on my remaining fence sections that get sufficient sunlight (I'm in a 1950's neighborhood with lots of mature trees)

I was noticing our Evans sour cherry trees were not fruiting as much as they have in previous years, and I think I have myself to blame. When I was harvesting last year I was pulling the fruit off the stem and leaving the stems on the tree, most of those remained on without the weight of the fruit to pull them off. I theorized that those nodules from which the fruit sprout won't flower when there is still a stem attached, and some reading seemed to confirm this. Interesting little ways in which a person can affect yield. I've pulled off all the stems I can reach without a ladder and will try to be observant if any of them can still come around (there are still some late flowers appearing as of today). Perhaps I'll mark some of the branches where I just removed lots of last years dead stems using a ribbon. I'll take some photos so I can gauge whether anything still happens this year, or if I'll have to wait for next year. Lesson learned, I thought I'd pass it on.

I have a couple nice cucumbers now.

I was scoping out my kohlrabi and I had a ton of cabbage moth caterpillars on them. I’ve sent two days plucking and squishing. I have two rows under a bug net.

What do others do to combat cabbage moths?

When you live in a condo your garden is downsized into pots. Can't believe how tall the Orange Cherry tomatoes have grown so far from 2 seeds this spring. The other tomato plant is grown from seed as well, not sure of the variety, seeds came from SoCalif.

This is what I look for as to timing the harvest - only a few leaves still green right on top:

https://i.imgur.com/FxbPO8z.jpg
them two bushes in front of the truck was a subtle cameo......

nice !

After 4 straight days of caterpillar hunting, today I only found 4.

Got to say next year, I’m buying the big mess that allows light and water through.

So far haven’t seen that. I just have various sized caterpillars and one has a few aphids. I think the ants are raising them as they often do.

Nope. My rule of thumb is 60 days from planting to have new potatoes big enough to eat. They max out when the plants have died off. Most years I wait until fall to harvest. This year I am starting to eat them earlier. Less likely some will sprout in the cold room over winter.

This particular plant sprouted in the basement in late Feb. By May it looked like a long legged spider. I planted it and got potatoes off it.

Growing up in BC and picking lots of cherries commercially it was important to pick them with stems, not only to have loggevity in storage but to insure next years crop.

So I planted daffodils and tulips about 5-7 years ago. There were much fewer tulips this year but tons of daffodils.

So I dug everything up. I separated the daffodils, tulips and crocus bulbs.

I had 5 massive clumps of daffodils. Went from 25 bulbs planted to separating them out and replanting about 100. Now I have 200 more to plant elsewhere.

Anyone else have their daffodils spread like crazy.

The tulips seem to have either not leafed this year, leafed but not flowered, got rot, got thrips or got eaten by squirrels.

Seems like daffodils are awesome. Planted a couple new varieties this year.

First harvest - the weather stayed nice enough for these all to come off the vine like this. Not bad for a little container garden on the deck. My tomato plants were just under 60 inches high. There were about 20 more jalapenos in the first batch, but my daughter figured out how to make jalapeno cream cheese bacon poppers with the air fryer before I could get a picture..:)

Still lots more of everything on the vine and only had two frost nights so far, with great weather forecast this week.

Although I have to admit, it's a little surreal to be able to grow jalapenos and bell peppers in Canmore. All were started indoors from seed and hardened off outside by mid June. The bell peppers were an experiment with seeds from a Safeway pepper.

This is a giant variety. Doesn’t get woody through the middle.

We harvested our beets and carrots today. Beets did very well, carrots seem to get better every year. Installed a drip system this year, and did it ever help with a better yield.

Kohlrabi is one of our favorites, but the slugs cause havoc with them. Any advice to keep the Kohls slug-free?
