View Full Version : A couple Lakers through the ice

Went out for a quick fish on Friday night, it was slow but I managed to pull in a couple nice Lake Trout. First one was 18.5” and the second was 18”, both caught at 60’. I did lose a 3rd one, it was at about 40’ and may not have been a Laker. Those were the only fish we saw on the Panoptix during the trip.
This is the slightly larger fish and both my brother and I noticed that the tail looked “different”. The spot pattern continued boldly right to the end of the tail. It’s not unheard of, it’s just that we are more accustomed to the pattern fading out faster, more like the second fish.

There is about 3’ of ice on the lake and we were fishing in 92’ of water. In the Fish Finder pics, you can see we were on the edge of a steeper drop that continued down to about 300’.

Very nice scenery for sure....colors of trout can vary but man every now and then you just simply step back and one really catches your eye.

Could it be a splake perhaps. I caught a similar looking fish early June out of Two Jack lake by lake Minewanka many moons ago a local said it was prob a splake. In spring the reddish brook trout tinge to their fins fades.
Prob not but fun to speculate.

I had to look that up, I have never heard of a Splake. Now that I’ve looked, I’m seeing many pics of Lake Trout that have the spots right down the fins and tail. I think my smaller fish may actually look more like a Splake than the larger one. There is some interesting info out there. To my knowledge, there are only a few types of fish in this lake, Lakers, Bull Trout, Graying, Burbot, Suckers. The lake was once stocked with Rainbows, but have not heard of anyone catching one in many years. There are also smaller baitfish, like Cisco’s.
