We are getting one of our Conquests ready for spring and had a few outer axle bearings to change out. The front left axle was being a real pain, resisting all my removal tricks. The inner axle bearing simply would not let the axle go. Set screws out, penetrating oils applied, I tried hammering, tapping, cussing and swearing.
My helpers and I decided to make an “Axle removal tool”, I’m sure there are many different versions, but this is what we came up with for removing stubborn front axles with random stuff in the shop.
We tested the fit on a rear axle, then slid the tool under the engine and tried the front axle.
WINNER, it worked beautifully 👍

I made a smaller version out of coupling nuts and two bolts to remove the hubs on my jeep, one has to be creative at times.

It’s fun to watch them and help them work out problems.
Sometimes they don’t always agree on solutions though:argue2:

Lol, yes, there were a couple other options, but I’m not sure I’m ready to have the girls running a gas axe in my Argo.
This was an exercise in getting the girls to “figure out a way”, their next step if this hadn’t worked was going to be Hammer & Cold Chisel to the outer race of the inner bearing.

Good info, one of these days my dads Bigfoot 6x6 will need some bearings and that simple tool looks sweet.

Argo - the mother of not only frustration, but ingenuity too.

Nice tool. I wish I had that back when I had mine!
