I thought this may be a fun thread to kick off and keep going. Folks are getting spring fever and likely starting projects on their boats. Post up what you did on your boat today and feel free to show off your rig!

I started school in the fall and had to move the boat project to the other side of the shop. Just finished finals so I hope the boat comes out shortly.

I have installed my new electronics and built a carpeted wood casting deck for the bow of my boat (18ft fiberglass fish & ski). Still have to clean and polish the whole boat, change leg oil, and pack bearings on the trailer. That will be next weekends job when it warms up.

Installed mount for the other Lowrance on my dash to operate the active target. Made my own portable active target mount. Lots of videos on this but not so easy to find the exact right size of pvc pipe to build with. Lol.

Too much!! Purchased a full canvas camper enclosure for those "Less the Optimum" days on the water, Blue Tooth Stereo system, 1100w 120v Inverter....not sure why yet...but hey, Why Not! And finally....a new Lowrance Elite FS system. Ya, this time of year always makes me have boat fever and a big dent in the pocket book!

I just bought a 14ft Naden this week. I bought and mounted a Endura Max 55lb trolling motor. Still working on the wife to let me buy a Helix 7 all season. Mounting seats, redoing the anchor line and mounting the gasser on the weekend hopefully.

I been a busy lately on my boats. I purchased a new to me 40hp outboard to upgrade from my current 25hp. Upon mounting it I realized my transom had a bit of a bow in it, so I rebuilt the transom and painted it a nice metallic . Yesterday I threw a wrench into the mix and purchased a "project boat" with a blown 40hp. With the help of lady luck and Pilsner beer I was able to get that motor running. I'm not sure what I'm going to do now, I'm debating on keeping the original 40hp I purchased as a spare, for this new boat and possibly put my original boat, motor and trailer on the market to hopefully cash in on these ridiculous covid prices people are paying. Then again I would feel guilty parting with that boat.

Awesome stuff all! Keep it going...

I brought my new rig home and started mounting my Helix 8 MSI+ and my Mega 360. I’m still waiting on my Helix 9 and 10. Hopefully they arrive soon.

Here’s a pic of my placement. I have them rail mounted so they are easy for me to remove and use on another boat or the ice. Wiring it up clean is my job for today.

Got a good deal on a new 3 gal gas tank with a hose and what I thought was a new type of bulb. Turns out this is $65 demand valve and not a bulb so have been getting an education about what this all about. It only allows fuel to leave the tank when needed by the motor and is supposed to prevent gas from leaking into the water. Thanks to the environment/climate change movement - more cost to boat owners. Apparently it is mandated in the USA for all new outboard tanks.

If you are selling, one battery or two will make no difference in the selling price or how fast it moves, nor will having a 3 year old battery in it. Right now people are nuts to buy. The only thing they seem to care about is hull condition and motor. Sold mine last spring, think I should of held out till this spring, would have picked up some extra dollars but even last year I got really good bucks for it and it was gone in 3 days. Paid $28,000 for it 27 years ago, sold it for $22K. Best of luck.

I sponge-bathed the big girl before heading back to town today since she had a light patina of dust sitting with the cover off all winter. After 13 years of ownership and ***completely*** rewiring the boat two winters ago, it's finally "done". She probably won't hit the water until June, since I have a lot of shallow water mapping to do in the new Lund tinny before the weeds come up.

Most of my time has been spent working on the tinny to be ready for open water. The list is too long, so I'll just post pictures when it's done. Just need to mount the 36v battery bank for the Terrova and Vantage under the front seat and strap down the 12 gallon tank up front and I think it's done...for now.

P.S. I'll have a nicely broken in 2020 30HP Mercury for sale later in the summer when my 40HP Suze shows up. ;)

Just installed 2 trolling motor batteries to feed the Terrova up front. I went with group 31 AGM’s from Costco online. They were here within a week. Mounted 2 new rod holders to free up the hands for drinking coffee. Rebuilt the lower unit on an Evinrude 9.9 for a kicker. Hopefully be better trolling on the days it’s too windy for the electric to handle. I’m sure an 80 lb thrust electric would be nice but probably not gonna happen for awhile. Got a new seat pedestal on order that should be here in the next couple of days. Can’t wait to hit the water.

Yet to do- install 2 new AGM batteries, make cannon/scotty conversion plate for line puller, trailer suspension needs some work, have to install new tilt/trim senders, 7 new tires, fix shore power wiring issue to hose battery, rebuild electric steering system for kicker, install Shockwave S5 seat base, top up oils and check pumps. I would love to find someone that can cut polish the boat too.

Captain Blue, when you live around here every lake is a short hop away and as much as I like the trout in Diefenbaker- and I will troll again- I'm headed for the area north of The Battlefords, specifically Turtle Lake to locate the post spawn feeding grounds. I've met a few locals who love to share with my tournament partner so I have a rough idea and we plan to win the big prize this year. This is an annual event for me but it is usually mid August so after June 12, Dief. is a lot closer.

Been working on bringing a 14' tinner back to life that my Dad gave me many years ago and that I used very little.

Over the last couple of weeks I've cleaned out the boat, gave it a good scrubbing, checked and tightened the transom bolts for the plywood, replaced the anchor rope, filed all the little aluminum burrs along the gunwales that develop over time, and replaced the trailer tires. Also, stripped and refinished the oars.

Today was spent removing the old trailer lights and wiring harness and installing a new system. Tomorrow just have to complete the connections at the lights, then hook it up to the truck to see if I screwed it up. :thinking-006: Spare fuse on hand, just in case...! If there's time I will repack the wheel bearings, if not, that's Mondays project.

Oh, took the old Johnson 9.9 I had on it in for service, but in the meantime I bought a new Tohatsu 9.8 4-stroke. Picking both up next week and likely putting the Johnson up for sale shortly.

Have plans to install 2 swivel seats and a couple of rod holders. Tossing around the idea of putting a floor in it.

Been a while since I've done any lake fishing, so looking forward to the change.:sHa_shakeshout:

I started the day with the intention of doing about 20 things.

When I turned on the batteries to lift the leg, I got the little stutter like an old truck solenoid that had failed. Great

Long story short- I found out that the trim pump breaker had failed. I would assume it was because the one battery was quite low. I jumped the breaker and up it went. I then fought with other things related, had my wife run the tilt switch while I did a resistance test on the wiring from it, all good.

Then I pulled the batteries, which is an ordeal in itself. Replaced with AGM cranking and deep cycle, tried the tilt and jumped past the breaker, nothing. Then I tested resistance from the pump to the block, a known good ground, and nothing. Easy fix, I missed a ground. Found it, tilt trim working fine.

Tomorrow I will tackle bearings and get it ready to take to Lloydminster monday morning, back to the trailer shop for some updates.

And then a laundry list big enough to choke a lion before we leave on the 23rd to Rupert, if we are allowed to travel.

Not a productive day but knocked battery change off the list anyway. 271 to go.

Put the battery in and washed the dust and grime off the boat and trailer.
Right signal not working so had to fix that.
Right mount was broken on the rock guard so changed that out.
I put new bearings in the trailer last fall and changed the leg oils in main and kicker so I am good there.
Might run the main and kicker later this evening and give them the once over.
I don't expect any issues. All checked and maintained before I put them to bed last fall.

Mine got damaged on the road. Best suggestion would be to build a cover for the windshield like Ken07AOVette did for his striper. You can see it in post 28 and he posted about it when he built it a couple years ago.

If you need the protection on the water I’m not sure what your doing but 3M won’t solve your problem.

Put it in the water finally at Wabumun and put 'er through its paces. Worked great overall. Putting it back on the trailer was certainly rusty considering it has been 12 years (and even then that was a 14 foot alum that I could basically lift onto the trailer).

Took the new mapping machine out to break it in on Saturday. It worked like a charm, and I managed to map 340 acres this weekend according to C-Map Genesis. It was nice to putter around in 1.5 fow where I can't go with the Warrior. The windshield on my Warrior broke on a rare trip to Edmonton a few years ago. I think the new windshield with freight from Minnesota was $3,500-$4,000, so I can definitely feel your pain. 3M won't do anything but hold the pieces together (I probably spent an hour vacuuming after mine broke...it was everywhere). Nothing short of plywood will guarantee it doesn't happen again, but I run a Flack Jaket (https://www.flackjaket.com/fiberglass-walleye-boat-flack-jakets.html#/) on mine now under the cover.

Spent the last couple days working on the old Crestliner. Monday ripped out basically all the interior to get at the decking and strip the carpet off.
Amazing how much sand was still in the carpet as my wife vacuums the snot out of it fairly regularly. Today spent a bit more time stripping and picked up some vinyl flooring and adhesive (adhesive cost was surprising wow). Finding it a bit hard to find the right stainless fasteners as I'd like to replace the old ones as many are stripped or close to.

Going to change a few things along the way like reinforcing the area around the live well, adding a seat, and getting rid of the rear hatch that hides the gas tank and starter battery. Tank and battery will be exposed now but will be able to mount my seat a little farther back for a more comfortable reach to the tiller handle and will also have easier access/visibility to the bilge pump area. Will also add a bit of foot room for fighting fish at the rear and getting to the motor.

Inspected all the welds for the hull/floor supports that were visible and everything is looking good, no cracks or even the hint of one. Plywood is still in good shape as well so going to reuse pretty much everything except the piece around the livewell that has been stressed due to lack of support. Foam was all bone dry so don't have to do anything with that. All in all shouldn't be to bad a project. Was tossing around the idea of replacing the side compartment carpet but the wife doesn't mind the old green they used to use so it's gonna stay as it's in good shape.

Not doing any more work on that project until Friday so replaced the damaged anchor pulley on the 14' tinner and swapped a damaged seat out in preparation to chase some trout tomorrow. To heck with all this work nonsense :).

I went through this as well. I ended up trying 3mm and then 5mm lexan. The 5mm is much more ridgid and fits the frame well. I then 3m'd the front side as my first try with the 3mm got scratched up badly rather quick. Hope it works long term as a factory replacement was very expencive for my boat. I also invested in a pre-made truxedo window cover.

I did lexan as well. Never scratched for the rest of the time I owned the boat. It probably took two hours to build the first one but could build a second one and have it installed in under an hour easily. It would also cost very little to replace even if you had to do it once a year. Better then the $3k for a factory windshield.

I had my boat at a trailer shop today, checked axle alignment.
When I got it home I spent a few hours with a power polisher and some compound. I think I can have it looking new again in under 10 hours total. I nearly paid $1000 to have a guy do it for me, and I would have had to haul it a long ways.
Its sure nice to do these things myself.

At some point I have to get onto the deck and polish some more, waiting on weather now.
The keel will be done at some point too.

May as well share for all. 44”. No weight collected. Caught on a Rapala Peto in Burbot color. Water temp was 52F.

I always find the boot tail/paddle tail is a solid performer for early pike. Storm Wildeye work well too, but they don’t last very long.

Figured that was either a 40"+ pike or you had realllly long arms to hold it way out in front of you. Awesome fish and a great way to christen the new boat. Heck, I might even let a pike that big in my boat. Probably not...but maybe. ;)

Pulled the boat home this week and spent a couple days going through everything and getting it ready to go. First thing was check the trailer over good, tire pressures & wear, greased the trailer brake activation slide in the tongue. checked all the lights and wires, pulled the caps and checked the bearing buddies and wheel nuts. Next I installed and made sure the batteries were charged and NOCO was functioning properly, removed the rear sport deck, bow cushions and tow pylon and tucked them away. Cleaned out the livewells and flushed the plumbers anti-freeze from the system. Hooked the motors up to water muffs and started and ran them for about 5 mins each. Updated the mapping cards in the Elite 7 & 9 units. Checked the Hook 5 unit at the stern we run while downrigging. Gave the boat a thorough cleaning and vacuuming, cleaned the windows. Power washed the hull, trailer and towing cover then after drying the cover sprayed it and the rockgard with a good covering of silicone waterproofing. I updated the software in the Xi5 and made sure all was working with it then it was time to load the essentials for the upcoming season, inflatable pfd's, spare life jackets, anchor, anchor rope, spare remote fuel tank for the kicker, downrigger balls and releases, safety kit, tackle. trolling and fly rods, rod holders. Cleaned the bimini/half enclosure then sprayed it with silicone. Put the phone charger on board, towels and rags, fish measuring board and landing net. These boats sure have a pile of storage space and good thing with all the gear we carry then lastly put all the manuals for various gear along with insurance slips, spare keys etc in a zipper closed bag and tucked it away in the glove box. I think we are READY TO GO?!

After 13 years of use, the trailer got a new axle, new winch and strap and new oil hubs. This was all last year. Also, ordered a new style cover but just put it on this year. Took some additional customizing to make it fit like a glove. On all the pressure points we sewed in some additional material to protect those "wear spots". She is good to go!!

Threaded the stainless bimini tube work and put a M6 bolt in to hold a pair of road holders from rotating. I was using M4 bolts and on every strike they would get sheared off so I’m hoping the M6 bolt will hold them against 16-18lbs of drag. If these won’t hold it I’ll have to drill right through and go double shear.

Yesterday i went fishing, but..................last few weeks i was working on a few rivet/seam leaks i had.

9 year old Princecraft 174 that I use a lot had developed a few loose rivets, i took the bow deck off in the hope that i could get to the backside of the rivets to re-peen them, but the structure below the deck didn't allow for that. I bought the G-Flex product and watched some videos to see how I could use it on a boat that can't be flipped (as opposed to the 12' tinners they use in the videos).

Long story short, the product is amazing. I cleaned the area to be treated with a wire wheel, heated with a torch to remove any moisture an then applied to the leaks with a syringe (in the kit). Then heated the epoxy with a torch and it wicks into the gaps. After pulling the drain plug today not a drop of water came out.

Long term results will be interesting to monitor, but even if the epoxy does breakdown with time re-applying will be a snap.

If you have some leaks give it a shot.

It started this morning with the need to clean the rest of the fish stink out and get all the salt off from yesterday. Things spiralled out from there and I removed everything from the boat, pressure washed everything including inside the cabin. I used hull cleaner in a few areas, vinyl cleaner in others, took some smudges off other spots with a magic eraser, polished then waxed all the stainless, did the bimini and chairs with 303 protectant, tightened up a few loose bolts and screws, repacked all the gear and culled some junk I’m not using. I also noticed my flares go out of date this month so I’ll have to go get another set. Luckily I don’t need to cut or polish any of the glass again or I would still be at it. That’s a job best broken into a few days though, no way I would hit the whole boat in one shot.

Why 2 identical radio's, if I may ask?

Truthful answer, that’s what was in there when I bought it. They’re not the same though, ones 27 MHz and one is VHF. The 27 MHz is pretty useless for me though with a 10-15 mile range and the vhf is my go to. If and when the 27 dies I would replace it with a second VHF because I had a day out fishing my vhf hand piece didn’t work and a second identical radio for redundancy would of been good. Being 70km offshore in a 21’ boat with a 27 MHz radio that probably wouldn’t reach anyone only leaves an EPIRB and flares for options and the EPIRB is going to bring the coastguard but I can’t tell them anything through it.

Thanks for the offer but unless your going to come down here for a visit the shipping on the radio wouldn’t be worth it. Good news is, if wanna hook up some billfish I’ve always got a spot on the boat for you. Bad news is you both need to be able to travel then suffer through a 15 hour flight.

Have been picking away at the boat a bit here and there. All the plywood has new vinyl on it. Livewell is re installed much better and stronger than factory. New rear seat installed in a better spot and used the old rear seat to add another spot mid boat. Once again though trying to get the right screws for the deck has still been troublesome and holding up the show so to speak. I tried a bunch of fastener places locally including fastenal which was recommended (still appreciate the suggestion just didn't work out this time) and no one really seemed to want to make any effort in trying to find the right screws (stainless Ive learned is a real p.i.t.a).

Shortly after I decided to try to go right through Crestliner via Martin Motorsports and all looked really good. Fellow that I talked with sourced the screws within an hour and they were supposed to be here by the 14th or late last week. Long story short I started really hounding them this week and today I find out the order hadn't even been processed yet. Fairly ****ed to say the least.

So back to phoning around and ended up finding something I'm happy with out of K2 fasteners in Edmonton and since they are mainly a wholesaler I had to coordinate with a more local retailer to get them without paying the $100 minimum for cash sales. Funny thing is a lot of the stores I had called previously deal with K2 I guess and no one lifted a finger to actually try and get what I needed.

Anyways as most projects go it's the seeminly little things that bite you in the end. Boat is nothing special at all but I still want to try and do things as proper as possible so it doesn't give any long term issues for me or to whoever I eventually sell it to down the road.

I was nearly 30 miles from Rupert coming in when huge waves kicked up and smoked a deadhead. 0 warning, crested a wave and crash bang there we sat. After a few seconds we realized it had not ripped the leg off, and tried to regain forward motion. Any attempt for speed and there was a huge rumble, very bad vibration. Not knowing if we were going to sink or not, I called in a Pan Pan, informed the coast guard of our situation and just tried to keep the boat off the rocks. They sent out a high speed vessel to assist, and dispatched the crew ship to tow. It was early an hour before they arrived. I kept in contact with CG updating our status and location.
It was so rough they were unable to attach a tow line so we had to get back to the lee side of the rocks, where they attached and towed us back.
It was a 2 hour tow, we stayed in my boat in emergency suits, nothing fun about the experience to be sure.
When I trailered I couldn't see any damage, so I dropped the leg oil. No chunks or shavings. I pulled the leg, ujoints were good. I pulled and replaced the gimbal bearing and reinstalled the leg, had it at the local dealer who also inspected but saw no damage.
AO's resident guide told me that it was likely a piece of log stuck to the blade, every rotation would cause vibration and capitation. Of course we could not inspect in such rough water.
We fished all day yesterday and it was perfect. We got lucky in many ways that day.
Today- fishing. Wish us luck.

Great story, fun to tell the ones that turned out so good. A lot of people wonder what the Coast Guard does and why we spend so much money on it. If they had experienced what you have they wouldn't wonder any more. Great to have such a professional and competent group for these kinds of rescues. Best of luck with the fishing!

Thanks Dean.
I was trying to make up my mind about filing an insurance claim or self repair as we were being towed, thought for sure it would be a new Bravo 3 lower end and likely drivetrain, set of props. I definitely got lucky.
Out there that day the kicker would not have touched the water. Just the way the channel is when wind waves and tide hit perfect conditions very quickly.
The CG guys were just fantastic. One guy stood on the back deck the entire 2 hours with headphone radio gear, never took his eyes off us for a moment. They towed at 14 kts any faster and we fell out of their wake, which was a rodeo.
I had the leg trimmed up all the way back, and could see the spray off the props. That's likely where they dislodged the piece of log.

Finally cleaned all the winter crap piled up on boat. Motor quit end of last summer, got it all clean and tools out, battery charged, and fresh gas. Friend coming over to help me diagnose. Fingers crossed....

It's still going to constantly "hunt" for a heading in Heading Lock and randomly ramp to full speed. lol. Mine is going to eventually send whoever is casting on the bow for a swim. Good thing I always fish in the back, ;)

I got a used trolling motor for a good deal but it came with an older boat. I'm trying to get it to fit onto our good boat, but unfortunately it was not designed with motor mounts so I've just got it tied onto the handle. It actually worked ok for a bit but then the outer chamber of the boat was losing air and the mount was about to slip off, but good thing i tied those knots pretty good. Now I gotta find out where it was losing air from, it was fine last year and I stored it pretty good over the winter. Probably going to order an actual motor mounting kit for this boat soon though.

I meant to add to this thread last week.....what did I do to my boat today? Sold it! To a fantastic new owner. Wife and I are stoked to officially be shopping for an 18' with a 90 tiller. Can't wait to get into something with a proper dance floor on 'er.....

Son of a gun? Unnerving at best, I'm sure. Glad to know there wasn't any damage to the rig, Ken.
Indeed, the Coast Guard don't get too much appreciation until they are needed. Even though most do as much as they can to ensure a safe and sound journey, things happen.

Still looking forward to some pics!

Added in some ABS rod storage and re did the casting decks with eva foam backed by 3M, fun fact, if you clean aluminum with a 50/50 isopropyl water solution, 3M basically will not come off lol

Finally took the tinner I'd resurrected out for its shake down cruise. Been 25 years since I launched a boat and it wasn't pretty. Forgot to put the plug in...:sign0176:.
Yep, and the wife was there to see it happen and so were 3 other people. Oh well, bailed it out and off we went.

Anyway, the new motor started first pull and ran great for the 2 hours we were on the water.

The boat however, not so much, I really don't remember it having a leak near the bow that visibly gurgled up at the center seam under the front bench. :thinking-006:. Frequent bailing was again required. I'm getting good at it. Will be investigating and repairing / caulking whatever I find.

Oh, almost forgot, the new wiring harness I so carefully installed has a new 10" splice in it...the plug didn't reach the receptacle on the bumper. A true "WT#" moment, then I remembered I didn't use the hitch when I tested the lights. :sign0161:.

I am really looking forward to a much better next outing. Maybe I will even get to try fishing.

Since Monday, I have completed the following on my jet boat.

Monday: Completed UHMW install, removed UHMW, cleaned swarf and reinstalled UHMW.

Tuesday: flipped the boat solo using a jack and ratchet straps.

Wednesday: removed dash, reinstalled dash 10" forward and 7" up, this provided for far more leg room in the cabin.

Today, I hope to build the windshield and side window frames
and get them installed. As well as getting fore and aft bulk heads boxed in.

Measure, Measure, cut, grind, weld, and grind that's all.

Going to finish up the windshield, I hit it a little hot and it twisted so I need to fix it.
Then I hope to drop the pump intake in today.

I haven't taken either of my boats out of the shed in thee years.

My brothers and I had planned on a trip to the NWT last spring but covid put an end to those plans.

Then my health took a turn for the worse, so I haven't had either out in the past three years and don't expect to have either out this year.

It's hardly worth it. We don't have any lakes close to us and driving three hours one way for three small fish just doesn't make sense to me.

Besides, I doubt I could wrestle a 1500 pound boat off and back onto the trailer all by myself. Damn heart issues sure handicap a guy.

These days just walking from the house to the truck wears me out.

Got the new to me 20hp Merc on and running. Relocated the trolling motor battery to the bow. Then took my son and his friend (6 and 7) out fishing to Rattlesnake. Trying to hook into some walleyes, which didn't go very well. Got one pike to the boat for the friend but the last thrash cut the line (pike on a walleye set up...)

Might have to find a more productive lake than Rattlesnake but being as we live about 10 min from it makes it so convenient.

Worked as it should. Trolled 6 hours and not once searched for a heading or ramped up to full throttle but then it never ramped up prior to the updates though it did search for a heading often originally. All the features worked as they should. Sure made for a nice frustration free day of fishing!

Glad to hear yours is working good. It's a great system in principle/when it works properly. But it is known to have several issues. Even Lowrance has acknowledged that the gateway hasn't worked as well as they had hoped.

I like mine too other than the occasional full throttle burst (which is dangerous IMO) and the fact that I can set "cruise" by throttle setting but not by speed as I should be able to. I may pick up a Ghost in the near future and move the Xi5 to the mapping boat now that Lowrance has released a 60" shaft.
