Last winter I inquired if anyone had tried using a long Steelhead rod for predator fishing from the shore, and ended up getting a 9 1/2' medium action. Today I finally got to try it out and for what I do it works really well. Throwing 1/4 -3/4 oz lures the increased casting distance was notable, and the longer rod helped keep the lure off the bottom when retrieving it into the shallows, as well as fighting fish.

For most river fishing its probably not necessary, and when fishing from banks with lots of brush it would be a real pain in the butt. For wading big water flats however, its the cats meow.
