Anyone on the North Saskatchewan river may want to know that the water levels will be going up as water is being diverted and let go from Abraham lake dam starting today, July 21. Not expecting out of the normal water levels. Closures around the Bighorn are in place for camping and other recreational activities.

And I quote from facebook...

"Alberta Environment and Parks is temporarily closing random camping and recreation in the area around the Bighorn Dam as of noon July 21 until further notice.

This closure is to allow TransAlta to gradually release water through a spillway at the Bighorn Dam west of Nordegg starting as early as July 22. Use of the spillway is expected to increase debris in the North Saskatchewan River, but water levels downstream will not exceed normal seasonal levels.

Our staff are working closely with TransAlta to notify and evacuate campers and recreation users in the area around the dam in the Kiska/Willson Public Land Use Zone. We ask the public to avoid the area, respect posted signage and follow directions given by Conservation and Recreation Engagement Officers and TransAlta staff to ensure their safety.

Alternative recreation areas are available throughout the Bighorn Backcountry. Updates on the closure will be posted at http://alberta.ca/bighorn-backcountry-trail-and-area. "
