So this is my first year fly fishing and am starting to get the hang of it. One thing confuses me though and that is fly selection. Now i know everyone will have a different opinion on this but is there any fly's which are just a general all round good fly for fishing with? Like a five of diamonds for the fly rod. I live in Red Deer so spend most of my time chasing trout in the river or out west by Nordegg and area and i am getting more and more confused as to which fly to use the more i research them so until i refine my skills any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

only thing I would add is a stimulator

agree on all of this-do not underestimate nymphs-slow and tedious but the fishies like them.

I'm kind of liking the foamies these days. They are durable and keep on floating no matter how sloppy my casts. Small hoppers are great during the heat of summer.

X3...luv the foam flies; I usually tie a nymph a couple feet below the dry for good measure.

Foamies work...

Black beetles have given me some pretty good days on some little creeks when nothing else seemed to be working; definitely one of my 'go-to' flies!

I'll have to try the bettle ones and thanks for the tip on the nymph - although what exactly are you trying to imitate? Or you just doubling your chances?

Make sure you also have bead head versions of these, too!

I have to agree that foamies work well. Some of then look rediculous but fish love 'em (esp cutts). Plus, they always float so presentation is easy. The buick 52 is a good option for rainbows (wet). Stimulators are a good all-around pick. I typically dont worry so much about hatches, etc. Figure out the colour and size that they are taking and you're doing well.

Just doubling my chances. If the trout are really keying on the hopper, I'll get rid of the dropper; it's a lot easier to cast tight to a bank with just the one fly.

:lol::lol::lol:
Oddly enough, I don't think I've ever used a SJW as a dropper off a dry; I usually use a small beadhead nymph- the 25" brown you see below was taken on a yellow Copper John dropped off a Chernobyl Ant.
When I nymph with an indicator, I always start with 2 or 3 nymphs on my line; there's ALWAYS a SJW in the mix. If I'm catching all my fish on just one of those nymphs, I'll remove the ones that aren't working; I like to offer them some choices, but with 3 nymphs, an indicator, plus splitshot... some days I spend more time untangling than fishing!:D

Ahh...this is a thread I needed to see!

I've only got a spinning setup, but I want to try using a fly/bobber rig where I see a lot of fish surfacing. I mainly fish the NSR, so I'm assuming most of what I'm seeing surfacing are goldeye. I'm not sure how that effects things since I know a *lot* of fly fishing is done for trout.

If anybody has any suggestions for general flies to try for my particular situation, that would be awesome :D

I know next to nothing about fly fishing but this seems like a good way to work my way into it. I probably won't be buying a whole ton of flies yet, so ideas on 'general' flies to try are awesome :)

I literally laughed-out-loud the first time I saw a Chernobyl Ant - until I started catching fish with it.

Here's what I picked up today. Basically this is what the guy at TFH picked out for me, except for the wooly buggers (picked up a couple of those since they seem quite popular on the board) to try to catch some goldeye or whatever it is that I see surfacing in the river :)

So Headed out to Ram River today and finally broke my skunk. I caught my first fish on my fly rod with........ a foamy fly! Wasn't very big but hey the skunk is over lol. Thanks for the help guys, and your right, those foamies look funny but they by far gave me the most hits! I'd post a picture but can't figure out how.

Awesome, glad to hear you broke your skunk!

I tried the fly on spinning gear thing for a little while, but soon got distracted baitfishing for sturgeon instead! It's definitely something I still want to put more time into. I was going to grab a couple of those foamies when I went fly shopping but I didn't see them out in the open when I was at TFH and didn't even think of them at the time.
