You would think the guy would at least have a record smile, too.

Measured 34 inches, with a girth of 21.5 inches.

Tipping the scales at 18 pounds, 1 ounce.

Beat previous record at 17 pound, 9 ounce in 1980.

That is a really interesting observation pinelakeperch!

Zanders are thin in comparison to walleye, which would explain the length without the girth! Not only that but they are pail in color without the gold.

How to Identify Zander
Zander looks similar to Walleye and Sauger, and could be confused with these native species. It can be identified through the following physical characteristics:

Can grow up to 100 cm in length.
Gill cover (opercle) does not have a spine (the gill cover of native Walleye and Sauger both have 1 short sharp spine).
Two dorsal (back) fins, the first containing spines and the second containing soft rays.
The anal fin has 2 to 3 spines and multiple soft rays.
Tend to be green to blue-grey on the side with a white belly and yellow-grey fins.
The dorsal (back) and caudal (tail) fins have rows of black spots on the membranes; this is most visible on the spiny dorsal (back) fin
Mouth that has many small teeth and 1 to 2 enlarged canine teeth in the anterior part of its upper and lower jaws.

Zander was my thought, as well.....there seems to be no white spot on the bottom corner of the tail that usually designates Walleye. But I think Zanders are only in Europe, no?

No, after my research last night they are an invasive species and they are in North America.

That "Walleye" always seemed strange to me. I have personally caught more than I can count. 32" and skinny like the one I posted, never heard of that in my life and the color is off too. I have caught 20" walleye that weighed more???

They were stocked in some regions of the US.

Sure looks like a walleye yet it doesn’t seem to have a gill spine.

Yet second dorsal doesn’t have a few leading spines.

Anal spines or not covered by hand.

Looks like a white spot on bottom of the tail.

This suggests no Zander in Canada but an established population in the US.

I’m saying based upon the photo…you can’t say for certain a Zander or walleye.

However if caught in Alberta it can’t be a Zander.

I was curious what the visual difference are.

Main thing was you had a blast… caught a lengthy fish and have a story.
