It sure is chilly, I guess this is the payback we get from October and November.

And since when is it being called “Environment Canada and Climate Change “

Yup an extra $100 on the heating bill, but such is life, house set at +24 so nice and warm, both vehicles in the garage, furnace in garage set at +5, it also doubles as a great fridge for storing leftovers during Xmas on the shelf :)

Be sure to have extra warm clothes, toques, mitts & even socks and a blanket or two in your vehicle, don’t be that person who has a mechanical breakdown or accident when driving from their heated parkade to another heated parkade who didn’t even wear a coat, never mind bring one. A good time to check your emergency kit in the vehicle and be sure it’s well-supplied. Keep your fuel tank topped up. If you have a diesel, be sure you have some anti-gel additive in it.

It’s sure a good time to hunker down and stay cozy if you can.

Yup it's to warm by my standards I like it about 20 but the wife is always cold, when the grandkids are here they are always cold, PO it's always cold in your house so up it goes, I loose that battle, it's perfect in the basement where my chair is and my 65" TV :)

I know what you mean. I remember one night up in the arctic it was -50 and a wind at least 30 mph. Gusting close to 50. Nothing as cold as an arctic wind. Now that was cold staying in a sleigh camp at Shells Camp Farewell.
Don't know if I could do that now. -30 is enough

Drove from Peace River to Calgary today (left at 13:30-ish, arrived at 22:30-ish; travelling with kids). In the vehicle the numbers only changed a few times from -30 the whole way: first time in Edmonton to -29 and then -28, then back to -29 and -30; the second time in Calgary to -29 and then back to -30. She didn’t want to discriminate between the north and south today, lol. Of course in Peace River it kept dropping or so the forecast says (and my cousin):

https://i.postimg.cc/wT10Ycx7/54603-C08-AD2-A-42-CE-851-A-96-CD481-D800-D.jpg

I actually don't find it that cold until it drops below 40 and wind picks up even a bit (not a fan (lightly speaking) of wind in any season). As long as a guy can move around a bit. A nice walk is very refreshing now and then. Often times -15 feels much worse, imo, especially when it is a bit humid and windy. Walking around at -35 and lower while snowing can feel a bit like face acupuncture.

The River has been boiling for a few days in a row now:

We are having a better time of it here in Edmonton. Only -32 on the deck here this morning, and a light breeze of about 5 K, just enough to flutter the flag. That is cold enough but a lot better than -42 further north. Sure glad I can park the vehicles in a heated garage, WAY nicer when you have to go somewhere.

Coldest spot in Canada right now is Hendrickson Creek Alberta, between Hinton and Grande Cache on highway 40, at -44.2 C

I drove from Saskatoon to Camrose yesterday, -28 pretty much all the way, but the main highways were great, pretty much clear and no ice. Yet three vehicles ended up in the ditch, one minivan managed to hit a pickup, and I met five emergency vehicles just after passing the scene. The secondary highways did have some snow, and the ditches were so drifted in, that if you hit the ditch, it wasn't going to be easy to get out. A friend came across a couple that had spent the previous night in their vehicle in the ditch, and he gave them a ride, as there was no way his pickup would have been able to pull out their vehicle.

We have a hockey player flying in from Wisconsin this evening, he left his SUV here over the holidays, no block heater(yikes) the wife an I have some running around to do today, so if his SUV will start I’ll give it a treat in the garage, if it won’t start(it did yesterday) it’ll be a circus with a Coleman stove and a canvas tarp I guess.

Was looking at the weather map, you guys are in a real nasty cold pocket, along with Edson, Chip lake etc.

I have done the tarp and Herman Nelson, Coleman stove thing in the past, my suggestion is it would be way easier to hit Canadian Tire and just buy a magnetic block heater or a recirculating one to cut into the coolant lines and put a charger on the battery. It is going to stay this cold for a while, he is going to need some form of block heater if he is parking outside. Hope you get lucky and it starts for you.:) Man this weather is hard on equipment.

Aluminum engine blocks, pans and what nots make the whole magnetic stick on thing a bit challenging. I informed him he needs to get his ride into the shop and have a glue on pan heater installed. On top of all of that this bone head curve we live on means the safest place to park is the other side of the street.
Shovelling my front walk is like doing road work, I have to park my work truck in the way to keep the rally racers from driving on the sidewalk. I’ve lost a side view mirror twice on the work truck…….

And if he isn't using synthetic oil, it also helps a lot. I still remember when a past CEO of our company, that came from the Southern USA, asked if all of our vehicles were electric, when he saw the cords on our trucks.

-36 when I fired up the car this morning for a quick trip. Plugged in and she started up no problem. I decided to extend my trip and take the Honda for a little drive to warm up the legs on the highway and test her cold weather abilities.

Overall it went as expected. Cruising at a 100 I get up to normal operating temp about 5 km outside town. Cabin warmed up very nicely and by my return trip to climate control was dialing back as it was nearing my set temperature. As long as the little engine is working no problems.

However the second you get in town for the stop n go driving in these temps the engine cools off quickly. Climate control roared back to life pretty quick trying to maintain temp in town.

Two things that really help those small motor cars, pull it down in the gears to keep your rpm neat 2000 to 2500. Also put a piece of carpet between the grill and the rad. It still allows air through at higher speeds, unlike card board, but at low speed it reduces the cold air. Your car will warm up faster and stay warm better.

My new pickup actually has temp controlled shutters on the rad. Makes a huge difference to how quick it warms up and stays warm. Don't need to put in the grill inserts and carpet like I did on my 96 2500.

I my old civic was a manual so I could do that. My current one has a CVT so its pretty much a passive experience driving. It is funny my old commute used to be pretty much all highway. My little civic would roast you at -40C just because that little motor was working, full heat on that thing was dangerous no matter the temperature. I thought everyone was absolutely nuts for these cardboard rad blockers I would see all the time. It wasn't until I moved to town and lots of my driving is slow/stop n go until I realized why people did that. My newer Honda has heated seats so that makes up for the slightly cooler in town driving experience.

That is actually an outstanding idea. I have put the blind over deer with the heater on to clean them in the real cold weather but it was never big enough for a moose or elk. A four man ice tent would work perfect. The guys headed to Suffield in January should seriously consider that.

I remember when so,me genius decided to do some renos to expand our building at work, and they eliminated our power supply to the parking lot. And they didn't just lock out the power, they cut the cables, even though they didn't remove them. And then another genius, decided that we couldn't idle the trucks for more than 5 minutes , regardless of the temperature, to save fuel costs. The end result is that half of out trucks wouldn't start , every time the temperature dropped below -40. The auto shop was towing trucks non stop during any cold spell, which cost us a lot more than fuel used while idling, or electricity to run block heaters.

waldedw
12-28-2021, 06:57 AM
Yup at the mine I worked in the Kyrgyz Republic we have the no idle rule for our diesel pick ups, plus Cameco has a back in rule to all site parking spaces so maintenance ran cords from the block heaters to the rear of the vehicles so you could plug them in, and every winter they had to redo about 75% of them because they were ripped off in the mud during the summer, a real cost saving initiative dreamt up by some bean counter in head office.:thinking-006:

One minus 42 morning I sat in my jeep to start it and I cracked the vinyl drivers seat. It also wouldn’t shift out of fourth at the top of super test hill that same morning.

I too miss the 80’s in McMurray and even the early 90’s. Nowadays though not so much. They can keep it…

Yesterday I had to use my truck-30 and it started without plugged in, when I was leaving it felt like I was riding in a wooden horse cart. The tires had flat spots on them and they are Blizzaks winter tires, so much for winter tires they don’t like cold either.
