Hey guys, looking for recommendations for a good trustworthy place to put a rebuilt tranny in my truck. It is a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 5.7 Hemi 4x4 automatic. I believe it is a 48RE.
Is it better to get a rebuilt or go to a junk yard?
Thanks for the help.

Happy new Year.

I bought a rebuilt for my 06 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9 Cummins 4X4. 48RE. Didn't even consider the junk yard.

I believe the 48RE is a diesel transmission and not one compatible in the 5.7 Hemi. Not sure but yours may be 545RFE 5-Speed Automatic Transmission?

CNP, I believe you are right. I don't know why I thought it was the 48re? thanks for the correction.
I will give these guys a call come Monday.
I use this truck as a plow truck, and have had several instances of overheating the tranny. it left me stranded for a while today, I could not move the truck. I had to let it cool down for a while and then I was off again. The fluid level was fine , but the oil is very dark and smells burnt. The truck has been rock solid for 329,000Km.
Thanks again.

For Diesel it is the 68 RE, and ACL Transmission in Winterburn is a wholesale Rebuilder. They do installs at the shop.

Rob Clark and his sons run the shop.

68RFE is not in Sitting Bull's truck. That tranny matches up with the Cummins 6.7 and didn't come out until 2007. His is a 2004 gasser 5.7 Hemi and probably has the 545RFE tranny

I'll tell you on Monday.I'll give them a call.
I have gotten a rough quote over the phone from Lo Cost transmissions, and it came to $2600.00 installed + gst.

2500 installed sounds like a very reasonable price to me as well. But I would check with North American Powertrain/ NADP in Edmonton. I’ve never had service work done there but I have bought parts from them and their service before and after the sale was excellent. Including a new transfer case that I bought from them, installed myself and then had problems a year and a half later.

They sent a brand new transfer case and paid for the installation and diagnostic charge at my closest shop. I couldn’t have been happy, they even offered to pay me labour if I wanted to do it again myself. Because I had no heated shop I elected to let the guy in town do it.

They will be sure to get my business again.

Totally different than the experience I and many of my friends have had. I find this unusual.

Well, got the transmission replaced. Cheapest place I found and felt confident that they would do a good job was Lo-Cost. They quoted me $2600+gst. They had me in that day and I picked it up at the end of the following day. They showed me the damage torque converter and transmission. I was happy with the service and everything seems to be running fine so far.
Thanks to all who replied I appreciate your input.
