Brookies or Rainbows

Im in the Camrose area,where is the nearest place to go and catch some decent trout from here,ive been to most of the places in the immediate area but the fish are dark coloured or the cormorants have gotten them all.Thanks for any replies.

Fish are dark because of sex hormones. They must be diploid fish and not triploids. You can check the stocking reports.
Diploids = 2N
Triploids = 3N or AF3N (all female triploids)

We watch the Bows go through the spawning motions in the lakes I fish but they are not successful. My wife caught a nice male Brookie the weekend before last and when she hoisted him out of the hole and held him up for a picture he started squirting milt all over. I've caught both species that have had eggs and milt run out on the ice or even when fighting in the water. We often see eggs floating down afterward on the aquaview.

Usually the dark colored fish are found in a pond with muddy bottoms or low water..And generally the fish meat is white.These dark colored fish are very poor tasting as the red meat ones are much better tasting, In some cases these fish taste so bad they are not edible.

So if I go to a lake and catch only shiny nice colored rainbows it's because of the stocking? And lakes stocked with diploids are better than lakes with tripoids?
So it depends on where you live and the fishing pressure if you want to catch some nice eating and tasting fish.

Diploid rainbows are fertile, but they need some upwelling through some gravel where they deposit their eggs. That most often means they need a stream with the appropriate sized gravel available to make redds. There are rare occassions when there is successful spawning in a lake. Most of the time lake rainbows just swim around the edges in the spring looking for a creek to swim up while they get all colored up. Eventually they just dump gametes unsuccessfully or resorb them.

You can check the stocking reports to see if fish are 2N, 3N (triploid) or AF3N (all female triploid).
