Need some help. I’m looking to buy a 16’ fishing boat that comes with a 50hp four stroke Tohatsu outboard motor. It’s not a brand I’m familiar with. Anyone have any experience with these motors? Should I worry about being stranded on the lake?

i had a 9.9 years ago. It developed a coil problem and could not be repaired. I phoned all over north america for a new coil to no avail. I found out that some were shipped over from Japan and could not get parts here in NA. Check it out first. BEL

Tohatsu is one of the biggest outboard engine manufacturers in the world. Many small Mercury motors since the late 80’s are made be Tohatsu and re-branded by Merc and all Nissan outboards are also re-branded Tohatsu motors.

Tohatsu is a Japanese company and make outboards as good as they come in my opinion. I’ve had several Tohatsu motors and presently have a 30hp Merc 2-stroke Sea Pro that is a re-branded Tohatsu.

Tons of Tohatsu dealers around so getting parts shouldn’t be an issue. Check out the dealer locator and call one up and ask about parts for the model you are looking at. Tournament Ski & Marine In Stoney Plain not far from you is a dealer.

I see tohatsu heavily used and popular in almost every country but Canada. I wouldn’t be too worried about being stranded.

As already mentioned they make many of the Merc and Nissan and other models out there and is a big focus of their business model. Many of the parts also cross over so if you cannot find a Tohatsu check Merc or Nissan and you will probably find them there if they manufacture that u nit for them.

I have fished on boats with many Tohatsus. They are very good, so no worries. For the best price and service call Darryl @ Europa Canopy and Marine. He owns the place and will give you personalized service and a price that can’t be beat. He is one of my best friends in the world. 780-237-9757. Tell him Shane told you to call.

Just an echo of earlier posts. I've had a Tohatsu for years and so have several people I know. No problems and service is readily available. I'd buy another with no second thoughts.

I've had a 40HP 2-stroke jet outboard for about the last 5 seasons. Never had any issues with it.

Lucky guy. Power to weight it’s the best 40hp jet out there. They almost never come up for sale and when they do they are gone instantly and for pretty good money.

Been to a fly in fishing camp 11 straight years, guy uses 9.9 15 and recently a 20hp. Fantastic little motors, easy to start, good on gas and plenty of power imo.

A couple guys on this forum run Tohatsu outboards - both supplied by Europa Canopy.

One of the guys bought his Mirrocraft, the Tohastsu and Trailer there about 5-7 years ago. His outboard has been excellent and reliable.

I was hesitant when he bought it (steering him to a Yamaha or Honda) but for $1000-$1500 less (on a $3000 motor) it was hard to pass up.

He is happy with it. I am quite impressed by that outboard - starts like a Honda, and smooth like a Yammy.

I have a 20 hp. and like it just fine. I'm not 100% sure but was told parts are interchangeable with mercury for small motors up to 30HP.

All Mercury 50hp and under are (or at least were up until recently) made by Tohatsu and shared many/most (but not all) parts. When you look at them, the top ends are just a little different. But what we saw were just different plugs, wiring harness and a heat shield really but they are the same motor really.

I'm not sure about the new pro kicker with the higher output alternator and EFI - it looks quite different compared to the legacy and current not pro models. Those are a very BIG change over the last generation and I'm not sure where they are made or by whom - but they are a totally different motor.

update - the EFI motors Mercury and Tohastsu look to be the same ones .... (non pro model at least) almost identical specs ,....so I'd assume they are still rolling off the same assembly line with only minor differences to the brand of filters, plugs and stuff like that maybe .... just enough to be able to brand/not compete directly with their clients (Mercury has to be one of Tohatsu's largest clients I would think). You don't want to bite the hand that feeds you - and likely why they do not "actively market" or compete in North America.

Price wise are the Tohatsu motors cheaper than a comparable Honda, Mercury or Yamaha?

Tohatsu supplies Mercury with all of their engines up to 30hp. The Mercury 40-60hp engines are made in their own plant in China.

Yes they are, and they have a five year warranty while Mercury only offers three years of warranty. I was going to purchase a Tohatsu kicker for my boat, but Europa couldn't get the exact engine that I wanted so he sold me a Mercury instead.

Good to know. They definitely aren’t very popular or rather commonplace here. But if they work just as well, have a better warranty and have support in the aspect of parts and service I would choose to save a few $$. The Beluga white does look better too imo.

For a small jet application you can’t beat a 30hp Tohatsu 2-stroke.

Here’s a 30hp at the crank Tohatsu (Merc Sea Pro) 2-stroke at 134lbs total next to a Merc 30hp at the crank 4-stroke at 195lbs. 60lbs heavier and a lot bigger for the 4-stroke Merc. Both are 30hp at the crank and run the same pump and intake.

I owned two Tohatsu motors. A 2012- 50hp injected 2stk and a 35hp jet injected 2 stk (which is the exact same motor spec). Light, and bomb proof. Sold them both to a friend and still they run like aTop with who knows how many hundreds of hours on them. Not familiar with the four strokes but why wouldn't they be just as reliable. Same company with the same engineering and quality control.

No experience of the large tohatsu (I have a 20hp 4stroke though which has been faultless) but I believe the larger 60hp plus tohatsus have been made by honda, so should be fine...

I strongly suspect that is incorrect ..... the Honda BF 115 is a way different motor if you look at weight, gear ration, injectors, lower unit etc...

where did your information come from? They have almost nothing in common.

In fact they are similar to the Mercury 4 stroke - very similar - I suspect there is far more in common along those lines compared to anything at all Honda related.

From 2017:

Tohatsu America Corp. will begin offering through its dealer network 4-stroke engines from 60 to 250 hp in January.

The eight new outboards — 60-, 75-, 90-, 115-, 150-, 200-, 225- and 250-hp models — are manufactured by Honda and rebranded under the Tohatsu name, Kurt Gardener, national sales manager for Tohatsu America Corp., told Trade Only Today this morning.

That is from 2017, but the new Tohatsu 115 seems to be a totally new design, nothing like the current Honda.

Apparently, Tohatsu is now making their own 115hp.

Bottom line is the Tohatsu outboards are great. Excellent value for the money. Sometimes the brands we are used to here in North America are not as common elsewhere - so we are hesitant.

same applies to smaller dirt movers like Yanmar or or Takeuchi products - they have no visibility here and people are cautious - but globally these brands are high quality products with a great track record.
