Just picked up a cz 455 17hmr and was wondering what kind of scope and rings to put on it . Saw a video of one with a 20 moa rail on one is that really necessary for a 200 yard gofer gun ?

I like a Leupold VX3 (or VariXIII etc) or 3.5-10x40 with AO or the 4.5-14x40 with AO using the Varmint Hunter or B&C reticule. No need for rails. On prairie dogs I found the .17HMR was effective to 175 yds with 17 gr V-Max ammo. I shot them out as far as 265 yards in zero wind conditions but bullets just hole thru at that range so then goal was to hit them in the chest like big game. A decent inexpensive alternative is a Burris Fullfield II, either 3-9 x 40 or 4.5-14 x 40 with the Ballistic-plex reticule.

I like to have 3, 4 or even 5 vertical hash marks in the scope. Figure out where they hit at max magnification and make a chart to tape on the stock.

Agree with the 175yd limit for the 17hmr. You can stretch that out to 200 on a calm day. Limiting factors would be the drift that you get on that 17 grain bullet and the quality of 17hmr ammo. IMO, the ammo is quite inconsistent. If you find a good lot of ammo, buy a bunch.

Punch the numbers into a ballistic calculator to get the drops for this round. I've taped them to my scope.
The 17 gr bullet has a bc of 0.125 and a mv of 2550.

I've got a bushnell 3500 4-12 x 40 on my cz 455. I like how the size of the scope matches the cz 455 and IMO, 12x is plenty.

I've got mine sighted at 100yds. The thick part of the reticle gives me an aiming point at 175yd.
