I have an old black powder shotgun with Damascus barrels. The barrels have bulges and the shotgun has issues that I don’t think it should be fired again. It is pretty however. I want to clean it up and just make a wall hanger out of it.
I have some 0000 steel wool trying to polish it up. It does shine up but it’s not quite coarse enough to take off some of the corrosion, crud, and old oils. What is the coarsest steel wool you would use that shouldn’t actually mark up the steel?
Or should I use some kind of scouring powder maybe with the wool and then oil it on the final polishing?
Any advice on cleaning up the wood; short of sanding them right down and refinishing?
Any advice would be appreciated.
