View Full Version : Why aren't customers given receipts anymore?

Got breakfast from Tim Hortons this morning, which is something I seldom do anymore. I was annoyed by two things, 1. I didn't know that you had to scan some QR code at the store to play the stupid roll up to win game. 2.as I drive off I discover there is no receipt. Those of us who are self employed rely on receipts to try to keep a little bit of our money out of Trudeau's hands as meals away are tax deductible I find this frustrating as it's money lost.

McDonalds puts the receipt in the bag A&W tapes it to the outside of the bag, every sit down restaurant hands it to you.

Should customers expect to have to beg for a stinkin' receipt, I see this as lazy and poor service.

I give all of my customers receipts.

Most places at least ask if you want a receipt. Another reason Tim’s sucks, aside from the gross coffee! 🤣

Look into the simplified method.

You can purchase a meal with your own money. And your company can expense you up to $23.00 per meal per day up to $66.00 a day for breakfast lunch and dinner.

You can spend say 13.00 and pocket the surplus is basically how it works.

Good news is you do not need to keep any receipts. Just a rough log that you were on the road for the day.

The Tim's App is so slow to open I don't bother i'm already through to the window by the time it kicks in then they stick the interact in your face while another hands you a coffee no time to ask for a receipt.

Well some of them still get coffee, hashbrown and bagel BELT.... but I guess it doesn't happen often if you don't know that you need an app to play Roll up to win. :scared:

Subway is another place and some pizza joints where you often have to ask for a receipt, it should be automatic or atleast a question if you want it or not.

I'm all for saving paper but my meal handed to me in a paper bag with a hasbrown in another paper bag and my sandwich wrapped in waxed paper stuffed with a handful of paper napkins makes an itty bitty till receipt pretty inconsequential. Give me one less napkin but give me the stinkin' receipt.

Because people who live and work on the road need to eat and have to buy a lot of their meals and so therefore becomes a business expense.

Unless you are an employee, then no deductible for you. Even thou you work on the road and eat on the go.

I'm no accountant or tax specialist but there are certainly lots of employees that can claim meals as tax deductions, IE commissioned sales people, need a form signed by your employer that you are paying your own expenses but totally legitimate. 50% tax deductible I believe.

Company truck driver, meals are 80% tax deductible. etc etc

Like I said I wouldn’t eat there, but when I use my company card for any meals or expenses while staying out of town, my admin clerks require a receipt for any transaction. Electronic or paper. So I see the need for them to give you something. I’m so used to it, I automatically ask for one when I purchase anything.

I’m the same. If I need it I ask for it. Usually before the transaction.

I use a specific credit card strictly for all business expenses. No need to keep receipts as ALL charged detailed on the bill are 100% business expenses. This also is your reconciliation at the end of the month to make sure you didn't miss anything.

Most corporate card services have a feature where the monthly expense reports download to excel and you can itemize expenses however you like, by expense type, or GL account, split costs between lines, etc...

Takes me less than an hour a month to straighten out my flights, rental cars, meals, fuel, office supplies, vehicle maintenance, any business equipment (could be tools for the trades guys) etc...

Much easier for the accountant too....

And because I work for a company where I am reimbursed - Our expense account software also lets you take a picture of the receipt and saves it for you on the ap when you go a remit your reimbursement claims at the end of the month too. I assume the same exists for small business and self employed people and would work the same way. Snap a picture of it and you are good to go.

I know this sounds like alot to learn if you are not used to this stuff, and I'm no spring chicken, but these aps and using my credit card detailed statement to reconcile is much easier than you think.

Even 10 years ago it took hours to do expenses - it's now, literally, less than an hour a month INCLUDING submitting my reimbursement.

Many places ask if I want an Electronic receipt or paper-i nicely communicate to all of them that I want a "proper receipt".

Same with QR menus-paper menus please and thank you.

I've been led to believe that if you get audited , revenue Canada wants to see receipts, not just credit card statements, no?

The irony of getting receipts for audit purposes, is that by the time you are ever auditted, the stupid thermal roll paper will have faded to being non legible anyway. If it's just for quick monthly reimbursement, you should be ok, but I wouldn't want to dig up thermal receipts more than about two years old.
I always instruct my staff to just automatically put the receipt in the bag.

Ask for one when you pull up to the window. It makes perfect sense for them not to bother when 90% of people don’t want one

Spot on as usual. I have used the credit card statement for my business card with a printout of my schedule/calendar for those same days attached to it for at least 25 years. The card statement shows all charges, the calendar shows where you were, who you met with, who you had lunch with, flights, hotels, rental car reservations, even driving info etc. That will stand up just fine in any audit.

One of the major problems over last 2 years with Covid is the hand cleaner faids the heck out of thermal receipts.

Slowly things are moving towards digital ID. For example TimHortons from the QR codes to Roll Up the Rim to not giving receipts. Then the license plates not requiring stickers, everything going paperless automatic bill payments etc. Whether we like it or not things are slowly heading towards where everything is done by computers .

Short answer? Laziness. They have to lift their arm a hundred times in a day, or take 2 steps to the printer. They have trained themselves that if you do not ask for it you do not want it. I have seen them roll their eyes when I ask for it and they have to take 3 steps.

Sometimes the simplest answer may be the right one

This. But it’s probably higher than 90%. Line ups at Tim’s can be brutal enough. Efficiency is key. 95% of those recipients end up in the trash bin anyway. Ask if you want one. Waste not, want not.

I always say yes to getting a receipt in the grocery store.
Otherwise how am I going to prove I paid the outrageous prices they charged if I am challenged going out the door???

Also, quick tip: Sticky tape over the thermal printing makes it last for years.

If you really want to keep a receipt long term, just copy it and staple it to original to it.
