Wabamun, Pigeon, or Ste. Anne? (Calling)

Hey everyone:

I have searched through the forum, lots of info on Pigeon, Wabamun, and Ste. Anne.

I'm godfather to 2 boys, 4 and 7 years. Which lake would you choose for them for their first outing? Just want to catch fish, lots of fish. Getting tags and keeping a walleye would be nice bonus, but definitely not a priority. Just want them to drop a jig over the side and catch fish.

Would encourging my friends to take their RV to Calling be worth it?

Been years now since I've fished those lakes, I spend my time chasing trout in the mountains. And advice appreciated!

Calling would be a great choice, provided the weather cooperates and the wind stays down. If it looks even moderately windy I would choose a different lake. It is a bit of a drive as well, so really depends on the kids ability to travel.

This year, we have done well at both Pigeon and Calling Lake, but you can keep a fish each at Calling Lake, no tags required. And at Calling Lake, we have caught some 9lb walleye, and a 20lb pike.

Wabamun has a very large amount of small walleye. So if your only priority is to catch a lot then that would be your best bet out of the Edmonton area. There are some slot-size fish in there but are often difficult to find.

If you have a good size boat i would head over to Wabamun and fish in 20 ft of water around Fallis . All the fish are around around the point are 30 cm ,which makes it a perfect size for your two young boys to handle .That age group they will be done fishing in 1-2 hrs and will catch maybe 10 fish each . Be sure you have the rods in the rod holders at all times or say good buy to them .
I just had two young farm boys in my boat one week ago age 4 and 7 also . It was more about the boat ride than the fishing . After one hr they want to go to the beach . .
We fished it today also . caught 51 walleye in 5 hrs between two rods with adults behind them all around 30 cm.

Pigeon this year pretty much 15ft of water off any shore the walleye are biting. Been really good fishing there this summer.

We are on the Mameo side and even with the wind his weekend, no algae at all. The lake is really high and the surface temps are still only around 71F. If it stays hot this week though it may green up a bit.

Towards the Mulhurst side, no big surface patches, but more green particles mixed into the water.

was out this afternoon fishing was hot, there were a few small green dots in the water , but no clumps yet. todays storm should keep it away for awhile .
