My older son left today to go work in the bush up north. Before he left he thought it would be good to go on one last fly fishing trip to the mountains with a friend and his younger brother. They caught a bunch of nice cutties but then came across a huge bull trout in one pool. After an epic battle including multiple tangles in a log jam they landed this beauty - 33" length and 16" girth.

Any guesses on what it might weigh?

My son did the best he could to video, but once they hooked it, it was pure chaos. He will piece it together and post a link soon.

Edit - video is finished. Check out the link below that goes along with the pictures...

If that is in Alberta - that's a really great Bull .... they don't normally get that size too often - especially males (I am assuming it's a male as it looks like the jaw is beginning to kype for the fall spawn).

Based on your measurements = 10.56lbs

trout weight = (length x girth x girth) / 800

Congrats Guys !!!! Great fish

Thanks for all the positive comments...the video is done and the link is below.

In answer to a few questions, the fish was caught in Alberta. The boys spotted the fish in nice pool, but once he took the hook he ran upstream into a log jam and then downstream 150 yards downstream into shallow water. The boys had to run after him to not get spooled. If you watch the whole video, they explain how the fight went.

Nice fish guys.

The fish would appreciate it if you left them in the water and not on the rocks/sand though. You can still measure them there.
You can pick up big fish with 2 hands...one in front of the tail, the other under the belly. No need to put your hand inside the gill plate. The fish is a treasure, it would be best to treat him with respect and allow him to pass his genes on to the next generation

This above....
I personally cringe seeing others handle fish or beaching them.
Knowing how fragile they are to our handling them, I rarely touch or net a fish once I've hooked it. Unless it struggles to swim away and requires some sort of revival to do so.
Forcepts, unhook and gone is my choice.
Nice fish tho guys.

Beast of a Bull for sure. Still looks like a safe live and release. Memories and fish tales forever. Need a bigger net and keep them in the water. If someone held you under the water as long as you held out OLD BIG WALTER out of the water ..... how would you do? Just saying. Still good job on the fight and landing. Most here can only dream of a fish of that size, specially out of a small river or stream. :sHa_shakeshout: Wet dreams :sHa_sarcasticlol:
