Good Morning All

Things seem a bit quiet around here so thought I'd post something. Who's fishing this weekend? Going Anywhere interesting?

I'm going to be heading up to Christina Lake at Conklin to hunt some big pike. It's a lake I've never fished before. Will likely do a day trip to Winefred from there as well which I'm sure will be fun, never been there either. Got a very nice new rod and reel which I'm very excited to break in on some monster gators, hopefully I can make it happen. Will report back on Tuesday!

I don't fish on long weekends, since I fish to avoid people. I do plan to hit a couple small lakes for trout around GP mid-next week some time.

Too busy hunting four legged critters and upland game but with these warm temperatures it has me wanting to wet a line too!

Good luck, look forward to your follow up.

Luckily, I can get out midweek.

Heading out Wed and Thurs this week. Then putting the boat to bed for winter.

Won’t fish much until Monday. Too many things going on. On Monday I hope to get a chance to walk some rivers in the SW. Oldman, Highwood, etc….

Excellent idea fishing the long weekend!
Almost all will be hunting.
October is the best time for fishing. They are big and feeding.
Should have the lake to your self.

Would love to be out this weekend as the weather is gorgeous. Unfortunately I am stuck inside for Sat & Sun with school all day, leaving Monday for family.

So I had a good weekend overall. With a fish to haunt my dreams for a while. Plenty lost fish anxiety this morning.

Fished Christina Lake on Saturday afternoon. Beautiful lake with plenty great Pike habitat. Caught good numbers but the size class was a bit underwhelming although I'm sure there's the odd big fish lurking in there. But with the fish being generally rather small I decided to make the haul to Winefred for Sunday. No secret there's big fish in that lake after all.

Got on the lake by around 10am and quickly got into some fish in the shallows. Kept plugging along through the smaller fish until eventually I hooked into a huge dead weight with no head shakes. Immediately knew it was a big fish and when I got it to surface I was amazed by the size of the thing! Not sure if it was because of the small fish I'd been catching making this look bigger relatively but I was immediately convinced it was a PB, bigger than my past 40.25" fish. I'd confidently say it was over 40" at the very least but wouldn't be surprised if it went a fair few inches over and made 20lb plus.

However we will never know....The fight was over, I had the fish alongside the boat, I had the leader in my hand, but it decided to open that huge mouth and just spit out the lure. It had engulfed the entire bait but somehow not one of the two trebles had found a good purchase. The wife got a short video of the fish, and I at least got a good look at it and found the monster I was looking for, but it's always nice to get a measurement. At least the fish got away safely and I actually hooked something that got my heart racing and my hands shaking. That's what keeps me coming back for more!

Yes I know a net would have all but guaranteed I landed that fish, but I do prefer hand landing pike. Just seems better for the fish in most situations with the big lures and double trebles we use getting all twisted up in the net and the fish tearing itself apart when it rolls. First time I've had a fish come off at the boat like that. That being said I'll get a big net for next time, just to use on the PB class fish.

After that I couldn't find any more tanks like that but caught plenty fish of a good average size and had a crazy amount of strikes that didn't stick, any of which could have been another beast. The fish almost seemed to be too eager to eat the lure, they were charging at it with huge speed and breaching to try and get it, sometimes missing it entirely or barely touching it. Huge splash and a hole in the water but no connection. Definitely an awesome fishery, hopefully I can head back there before winter sets in. Need to get a big fish out to wash away the pain of the one that got away.

Fished Christina Lake again on Monday morning before heading home but once again just plenty smaller fish with a few 30" plus fish mixed in.

Wow, that sounds like an amazing lake to get out on!
Gonna put that one on my list of lakes to hit up.
Thx for sharing.

Great story, nice pics. Reminds me of my 30+ pike at Carseland, just slid over the trout net. Thank god the hook snaggged the net and he was off. I was terrified of him!
