Cheap questionable hit on a completely vulnerable player...in other words a classic Frankengoof hit. At least when Scott Stevens destroyed someone he would drop the gloves but not Celine.......

That was a massive check. It could be considered late watching the replay in slow-mo, but at game speed I think it was legit.
I do admit that a head shot like that has no place in a pre-season game coming from a guy like Dion whose spot it solidified on the team, I might see if differently if it was a guy trying to crack the lineup.
What I HATE is this: a guy laying somebody out with a completely legal check (not necessarily this one) then having to defend himself against guys who want to punch his face in because they are 'standing up' for their teamate who was dumb enough to be crossing the tracks with his head down.

If he was my team mate(downed player) Id want to "punch his face" in too. Almost all players are vulnerable at one time or another.

I agree. Take the hit, get up and do it back. A guy shouldn't have to defend himself in a fight because he threw a legal hit.
I also hate it that some other Calgary player felt he had to jump in and defend Dion. Defend Dion, are you kidding?

Actually Dion didnt know the fight was comming. He was watching the puck. If some one can post up a video of it, you will see a Calgary guy push the guy who came off the bench just before he jumped Dion from behind.
It was a good clean check. Islander guy should have had his head up.
Kannon.. you would love to have Dion on your team:lol:

since when does making a big hit mean he has to fight. That was a perfectly clean hit. He had his head down and got steam rolled. Was scott stevens hit on Kariya a dirty cheap shot? Nope, a good hockey play similar to phaneufs. The trend of guys going after someone that hit there player hard has really been a recent developement. That rarely happened in stevens era. Maybe later in the game the goon would try and call him out but thats it. Watch clips of the stevens hit. How many Duck players went after him?

Great hit, totally clean, nice to see dion hitting again.!
Tired of guys having to defend themselves or teamates after a highlight reel hit(even though i love a good hockey fight)( was morency trying to hit dion with his purse??)
Perhaps the addition of jay-bow dion realized he kinda has to play again not go through the motions.
Scott Stevens never had to fight after his hits cause guys had more class and respect for clean hits......you get rocked..it's hockey...head up stick on the ice..lol

Very nice clean hit by Dion! If Okposo keeps cutting across the middle like that he will not have many years left in his career. After a hit of that magnitude Dion needs to expect to fight. It is part of the game!! Dion new it was coming as you can clearly see him look over his shoulders to see who was coming.

Why would he need to expect a fight?? It has only been the last few years that every big hit seems to be followed by a fight. Dion has a job to do, part of that job is intimidation and keeping guys worried about the big hit. If he had to fight every time he lays someone out he is not very effective for his team. He will pick his battles. He is not going to be sucked in by some no-name prospect who is trying to make a case for a role in the islanders organization. This business of fighting after hits needs to stop. Like I said before, how many times did scott stevens have guys chasing him around the ice after a big hit???? not too many. Watch his hit on Kariya, the rest of the ducks just skated around and went to the aid of their fallen teamate.

The hit on Kariya came late in his career after he had established a name for himself. To say Stevens did not have guy's coming after him because of a hit is a major under statement. Through the first 4 years of Dion's career he has fought a total of 25 times. Through the first 4 years of Stevens career he fought 56 times! And he did not pick his spots at all! His list includes names such as Probert, Tocchet, Wells and Dave Brown. Like you said Phaneuf has a job to do while on the ice. He must intimidate his opponents and keep them on there feet in fear of the next big hit. Every team in the league feels responsible to protect there players and teammates. If a player takes one of these big hits and the team just sits back to watch it happen they get labelled as a team that will allow themselves to be pushed around. Look at the Oilers. They were known as the easiest team to play against last year because they lacked team toughness. Numerous times there were big hits laid on an Oiler player with nothing to follow. This gives full momentum to the opposing team. The Flames have always had good team toughness. It is known that when you play Calgary you better be prepared for a battle, they will do whatever it takes to get an edge. If that means a big fight after a hit so be it. In Dion's junior career he did a great job of building a name for himself. 10 fights in year 1, 5 in year 2 and down to 3 in his final year. Right now he does not have that name yet in the NHL and that is why I say he must be prepared to do battle after one of these hits. Lay the big hit and then win the after fight and the Flames have all the momentum in the world. These fights have always been part of the game it is just that the hits seem so much bigger now because the game is so much faster than it was before.

True enough, but.... Stevens is not nearly the same type of defender that phaneuf is. Stevens was know for his big hits, and thats about it. He was not near the defensmen that Phaneuf is. I agree that team toughness is needed. There is a heck of a lot to that other than a useless retaliation to a clean hit. If you want to get back at them, Hit one of their players. Play the body hard. Intimidate your own way.

His feet left the ice... AFTER. Nothing wrong with that. In fact it happens every time with a hit like that. When you go over top of someone, physics states for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. well with phaneuf higher, Okposo basically pushes up on Phaneuf causing his body to rise. Charging is valid when you jump before the hit.

He left his feet because his foreward momentum carried him over top of the chump. Sheeze. I can't believe I'm defending a flamer here, but that may just have been the biggest hit of Dion's professional career.
Keenan let him take shortcuts and he got lazy. That hit was a league-wide statement meaning that Sutter is on his azz and taking the easy route is unacceptable. He will be an absolute nightmare to play against this year if he stays healthy.
Being a smaller foreward (years and years ago) was fine unless you were playing against a big, mean, cutthroat SOB that would paste his MOTHER if she cut in on him! Generally, you'd just try and make the safe play and do you 45-60 second shift hoping he's not on the ice next time!
As for all this BS about having to fight after a big hit..........whatever. It's just tactics. Why on earth risk a stupid fight in the pre season against some clown that's likely not going to make the bigs anyway? Win/lose, you still hurt the next day.

I think they are very similar defenseman. At the start of his career Stevens did put up some decent numbers. Career high of 78 points. Even though I hate this stat the most amazing numbers on Stevens was always being a plus player. Not once in his career was he a minus player and that is quite an accomplishment. Most people only remember the later part of his career. Dion will have a big year all around this year! Sutter knows how to push his buttons and I think he will be in the running for the Norris again this year. As he should be!! He is too good to have another year like last year. Sutter will bring him back down to earth this year and he will once again be a force on the Flames back end.

The hit was clean. I would like to see Dion drop the mitts and take on a challenge. He has a reputation of hiding behind the linesmen. If you tag a guy good then step up to the plate and you will be respected for it. A player doesn't have to scrap every time you lay out a massive hit but once in a while, especially in a meaningless preseason game you should. It will give you some respect. When Sheldon Souray called him on last year and Dion headed to the bench like a wounded rabbit...Well that was an embarrassing moment to be a Calgary Flame fan, especially when your watching the game with Oilers fans!!!

What is with all the "not in pre season" crap?
What is pre season for? It is to cut down to your final roster and get into game shape for the season. I have yet to see anyone cry "OMG!!! Not a fight in the pre season", what is the difference with a hit? Fighters fight to get a spot, scorers score to get a spot and physical defensmen hit! It doesn't matter if it is a game, practice, playoffs, regular season or pre season, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP! In Jr. we were told to go 100% every time we hit the ice, practice or game, if your head or heart isn't there, don't step on the ice.
They are playing pro hockey for christ sakes, people are fighting for a job. It's actually a little sad to see so many people up set about a legal hit in pro hockey.
And IMO, if you are playing pro and skate from blue line to blue line with your head down, you deserve to see stars.

You can thank the refs for the win...just got ripped off of a goal!!! As far as I'm concerned Nucks are still 5-0 in the preseason....ripped off! Raymond just scored but waved off...what a joke.

Personally I dont think Dion should make Team Canada hes too much liability..goes for the big hit and goes out of position. Thats fine vs the "Yotes but do that against Russia and that will cost us a goal. Celine is overrated IMO

Dion would be the first to admit last season wasn't the greatest, if he makes the Canadian squad he will have earned it, I'm sure most Canadian's would be cheering him on should he get the privilege to wear the Leaf..:)

It's the logo on the front, NOT the name on the back that counts. Hell, I'll even cheer for *barf* heatly when it finally comes down to it.

If that leaf winds up on his chest you will see a totally different player. Even Flames fans will wonder why he can not play that good for them! I guarantee he would not be a liability to the team at all, he will be a mean hard hitting shot blocking machine for his country!!

Well Im hoping he doesnt make the TEAM not because I hate his guts but because I think we need more complete Dmen on the backend.....maybe in 2014

Which brings me to my personal mini-rant.... hockey nicknames. when you hear players refer to each other it seems the best that can be done these days is to take a player's last name, shorten it a bit, and put an 'ie or 's on the end. Lame. So cutsie. I long for some of those old Runyonesque names of yesteryear (especially from baseball). Bobby Hull was "The Golden Jet". Today he'd be "Hullsie". :tongue2:

I'm no Flames fan, and I DON'T think they are a serious Cup contender, but that seems WAY too low. I'm thinking they are top 10.

nick names are something buddies give each other yet hockey fans seem to think these teen-aged millionaires are they're best friends. hockey is a fast, intense, beautiful game that's a pleasure to watch. these folks that exude the "my town's better than your town" mentality and live vicariously through they're local team make me ill. it's nice that the home team wins but it ain't worth the stress if they lose.

Isn't that the truth, If you look at the rankings, It looks like they just put teams where they finished the season last year. I don't put too much stock in the predictions. Heck they have florida ranked higher than calgary, In other rankings I have seen them as low as 28th. We will see who the better teams are come april.

The best part is that the flames only didn't dress one starter!! The Canucks didn't have the Sedin twins, Bernier, Mitchell, Bieksa, plus another 4 starters yet we still won....bring out the jersey nowwww Blackpheasant!! Oh boy...character win to dominate you guys the last 2 periods like taht.....Canucks are gonna be sooooooo good this year...I can feel it....Gillis has done a great job...even you Flames fans must admit.
Especially with how he is putting money into things players want...like new dressing room and areas like that...unlike Edmonton, Vancouver is a place players WANT to be now ;)

None of the players seemed to give a darn with the puck, a lot of just dump and half-assed chasing. 'tis pre-season still. Thursday is when the real debating begins. If Kipper plays like last night for most of the season, the flames will be just fine.
