I appreciated reading them too :) I had read the NY Times article earlier in the day, but the two others were new to me.

I'm not sure why people get their knickers in such a twist over rotenone, as it seems like a pretty good solution to me.

I don't know either. People hear the word 'chemical' and automatically assume it's bad.

Elke Blodgett, a St. Albert environmental watchdog, said she is outraged by the plan.

"I don't know enough about rotenone. I just know it's a last resort. And the whole design of this lagoon system has been totally mismanaged and engineered totally wrong. It's a nightmare what they did there.

How can you be outraged if you openly admit you don't know enough about the subject?

how gives a F about brookstickelback and some city workers that have to clean a screen once in a while. rotenone treatments are very expensive and there are a lot of good trout lakes out there that have been illegally stocked with perch that could use a rotenone treatment!

why not treat those lakes with rotenone and restore their trout fisheries to some of their former glory?

anyways, thats just an opinion from one tax paying alberta angler.

Outlet/Overflow of that pond apperantly drains into the Sturgeon River. Sturgeon River drians into the North Saskatchewan. May be worthy of a kill-off considering the above.

Thank you for the post ,

this one really concerns me as 20% of what I catch goeas in my system  ...

CALGARY — Health officials are warning seafood lovers to avoid eating certain species of fish caught in Alberta after tests found high amounts of mercury.

A public health advisory has been issued by Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Andre Corriveau recommending people limit or avoid eating walleye, sauger and goldeye caught in some places in Alberta to reduce any heath risks.

Women who are pregnant or of child-bearing age and children are encouraged to avoid or limit eating walleye caught from Pine Coulee, Red Deer River at the mouth of the Blindman River or the South Saskatchewan River at the Bindloss Ferry and Medicine Hat.

People should also beware of northern pike from Twin Valley Reservoirs in southern Alberta, and sauger and goldeye from the South Saskatchewan River at the Bindloss Ferry and Medicine Hat.

“While levels of methylmercury identified do not pose an immediate health threat, limiting consumption is the best way to reduce any long-term health risks,” Corriveau said.

“I recommend people who eat fish frequently from these bodies of water either avoid or limit their weekly consumption.”

Mercury converts to methylmercury by bacteria or chemical reactions once it reaches a lake, and then fish absorb it from water as it passes through their gills, or from the prey they eat.

Large predatory fish like walleye and northern pike accumulate more methylmercury as they consume smaller fish.

Just wondering about other lakes though ....
I wish there was a yearly check at least for the most popular fishing waters.
I love the sport of catching fish but unfortunatelly I also love eating them...

Cheers !

Thanks for that, kind of amusing. Now i hope you don't mind but there is one other Alberta fish news story that I'm surprised more people aren't talking about.

"Athabasca rainbow trout to be listed as Threatened under Wildlife Act"

http://www.srd.alberta.ca/BioDiversityStewardship/SpeciesAtRisk/SpeciesSummaries/StatusOfAlbertaFish/AthabascaRainbowTroutStatus.aspx

Basically anglers from North-central Alberta should be concerned. Excerpt from the press release "Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) is exploring options for angling regulations to protect Athabasca rainbow trout."
To me this is about on par with declaring the grizzly bear endangered but I'm just posting so others know and can be ready for any changes that may be coming down the pipe.

As I have mentioned here several months ago there will be a complete catch and release for all Athabasca Rainbows. This should have been in place 20 years ago. The issue will be wheither additional creeks where the fish spawn should be closed year round.
Where funds should be directed ..maybe some of the ACA money , should be
some rearing of Athabows for restablishing some populations in flowing waters and some local stocking in still waters for additional angling opportunites.

Break-ins reported at fishing huts

RCMP are looking for culprits who broke into about two dozen fishing huts on Sylvan Lake on Sunday night.

Richard Bush of Red Deer, who had his hut on Honeymoon Bay near Range Road 20 broken into, said on Monday that 23 huts were broken into while only a single one wasn’t hit.

Bush said he had a 200-square-foot hut with many comforts, including a small fridge, stove and cupboards built into the hut, which he paid about $8,000 to build.

The break-ins occurred sometime after sundown Sunday and early Monday morning.

He said someone used bolt cutters to break through locks on all the huts.

“There’s only a few of us who know we’ve been broken into because all the rest mainly come on the weekends and through the week,” Bush said.

Bush lost an axe and the fridge.

He said many other fishers probably lost equipment, including ice augers and axes.

No fishing equipment seemed to be missing from the few who were aware of the break-ins.

Bush, who was planning to move his five-tonne, has had it at the lake since Dec. 18.

Anyone with information can phone Sylvan Lake RCMP at 403-887-3334 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477

McLeod, I do agree that the proper strain should be stocked in that area but i think a change to complete catch and release will do nothing (the rules are already so restrictive a legal Atha-bow is either an exceptional catch or an extremely old fish). It is ridiculous lakes such as Mary Gregg south of Hinton are still being stocked with hatchery strain fish. I simply think the threatened status in that area is a bit overboard and i am worried about what creeks may be closed. Catch and release fishing is not the problem, those little fish can handle it. Poaching in waters that are already catch and release or of undersized fish may be a bit of an issue but i still think logging and particularly culverts are the biggest issues. Closing streams will not help, it's not like there's a pile of fisherman out there during the spawning season as is and i do not think the majority of creeks that would be closed to angling see that many anglers. I'm going to send you a pm anyways, would like to know if you've heard of something i haven't.

It is my opinion and others that ALL streams in the region should be C and R for Athabows and Grayling. The closing of streams options would b applicable for those waters were the populations have been decimated.
Agree with you on logging and culverts.
And yes Lakes in the region should be stocked with native fish that is why
we should be rearing native bows in the hatchery. My understanding is that only Triploid Rainbows will stocked in the future.

Free Fishing Family Day Weekend

Alberta has two free fishing weekends each year: the Family Day weekend and one in the summer that coincides with National Fishing Week. From Feb. 13 to 15, Albertans can fish in any public water body that has an open fishing season (not including national parks) without buying a licence. You can pick up a free copy of the 2009 Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations wherever licences are sold or at mywildalberta.com.
