Anyone been out for lakers yet?

Heading out there this weekend. Hopefully the smoke clears out a bit.

That's what my buddy found on the weekend too. I was just checking to see if it was his fishing skill that accounted for the poor results. LOL

Yes it was fairly slow made it out a couple days water temps were anywhere from 40-47 and very smokey over the week. Fish were scattered ad different depths and throughout the water comun. Things should pick up in 2-3 weeks!

Thanks! What techniques were you using? My buddy was mostly jigging last week as he was fishing with a guy in a ski boat. Not ideally set up for fishing.

the jigging bite is usually the way to go but most fish were pretty lazy

Water level is low right now, we had little snow over winter and spring rain was non existent but this could change.

It was pretty slow, but I don't remember the last time I enjoyed a weekend of flat water like that. Especially Cold Lake.
All in all, the 3 or us probably caught 100 lakers, but that was in probably 26 hours on the lake.

Biggest ones were 70 cm.

Whoops.

There were 2 of us fishing.

Fish were really scattered about. We had to really search for them. Most seemed to come from between 80 and 120 feet of water.

Sounds like a great outing.

It was some tough fishing, but the best weather I've fished in that I can remember. The lake was flat all weekend. :D

I'm looking forward to going back when it picks up. We were thinking of maybe hitting up Pierce Lake too. I've heard it's beautiful.

Pierce is a nice lake, go under the bridge and fish the river into another little lake.

Always had great fishing there.

Good luck.

We caught in 50-170 fow but others are still pulling lakers in at 30 fow.

There are globs of poplar fluff too that buggers up your line so be prepared to pick that crap off.

I was there last week . You are right they are deep and just not moving much .
Never seen them that deep this time of year and water temp is only 54 F on top .
I have a feeling the water flipped over as they say . Which makes them turn off for a week . Should be good to go for the derby then. Or they are feeding very early in the morning before the sun comes up .

Many are still in 30 fow or less which was the case when I was out in my kayak the other day.
We had a bigger boat so explored a bit but ran into two older fellas that basically got 16 in 30-50 fow keeping thier downriver at 40fow.
For the numbers right now that seem s to be the go too depths but I picked off two in 170 fow with my presentation in 80 fow on our way to another area.
They will eventually start to move and push the bait around but like every lake things change season to season which makes the hunt so much fun.:)

First laker ever for my wife’s friend and first laker in her new boat!!!
Yup I drive, set up, land, serve lunch etc
Rinse and repeat but I tell ya it is a blast watching people’s reactions when landing their firsts….
Another great day on Cold Lake.

i got out on monday. i called it slow for what im used to this time of year. fish still seemed to be near bottom at most depths which varied allot. tried a bit of jigging without much success, mostly trolled around numerous spots on the lake.

Yeah I think the upcoming tournament will be a challenge for some.

The ride back got a little choppy as the wind picked up from the south and yup we were at the far north end.
50-140 fow hitting the steep drop offs seemed to be the ticket and the apex trolling lure watermelon colour behind a deep six and willow leaf sealed the deal today.
Good luck to all the tournament anglers out there!
