Has anyone used there bones from the animals they get to give to there dog to chew on?
I'm thinking of saving the bones for my dog this fall ( the bigger ones anyways), Those bones you buy from the store sure add up over the course of a year.
Just need some info on if I need to bbq them a bit or any problems you may have encounter if you have fed your dog bones.
Thanks

Someone will probably complain about giving them the bones but we have always give our dogs the bones from our deer and moose.
Never once have we had a problem in 20 + years. Our dogs have always fattened up from the bones. It's nice to give them a little extra energy/fat for those cold winter months. I bet ya our dogs gain 10 pounds after hunting season is over.

I know I gain about 10 pounds on butchering day.
Do you cook them at all or give it to them raw?
Are your dogs inside dogs or outside dogs?
Thanks

I usually give my dog half the femurs, the sections that attach to the hip........he loves them. Usually I'll throw them in the smoker when I doing something else....

Isn't there a fear of the dog catching worms or is that just when they are puppies?
Been giving my feller the bones off my animals for years. He's as healthy as an ox. I smoke them, then throw em in the freezer.

I give my buddy the rib bones, but we have to be careful, she will sit and eat until she explodes if we give her a huge pile, so it gets 'rationed'.

My dads neighbor takes all of our deer and moose bones and scraps after we butcher, his dogs are on the raw diet and have been recycling our stuff for a couple years with no ill effects.
If you brown up some bones in the oven nicely you can also make very very good soup stock. Throw the bones in a massive soup pot with some garlic cloves, carrot peels, onion peels, whatever else goes well in a soup stock and you're set. We freeze the stock in 4 litre jugs then give the dogs the bones (boiling softens them up a bit as well). Nice to make homemade soup throughout the winter. Just don't give your dog raw bear or jackrabbit bones, that's where you may run into some tapeworm issues.

My dogs are outside dogs. We ration the bones to them too. Once they are done one they get the next so or so forth. Always gave them raw bones.

I have been feeding my dog elk bones for a couple years now,
Wet the bones then freeze right away, let the dog chew them a couple times a week and they'll have clean teeth and fresh breath! Elk bones are really hard bones too and they do the job on the teeth! Plus the dog loves the treat!
I keep a pile of bones in the freezer!

I always understood that cooked bones are a no no for dogs as they splinter?
Also always been told bird bones are bad because of splintering, but what about pork bones? Always wanted to give the dogs bones from pork ribs but never knew about pork bones.
