I thought that it would come out that the pen flare had been made into a zip gun when I hear the first report of the death by bear banger. This is why you can't buy the rimfire pen flares anymore.

The sad part is I have seen many of those pen launchers converted into weapons. Ive confisicated many of them while working at hospital and nightclubs. Alot homeless people carry them for "self defence".

It sad that something designed to save your life is being converted to take a life.

For starters there is no bullet in those pen flares. It's a .22 short blank. the only thing that is projected out is the phospur flare element.
perhaps that is what they are referring too as the bullet?
Or like someone else said perhaps it was modified?

Are those pen flares even legal anymore?
i carry one but have never used it.

If you read the article it was said that the Device was modified to shoot a bullet.

i know the kid that accidently set it off i played hokcey wit him the nicest guy ever....when i heard this story i was shocked...very sad

Can't say I've tried it since I was a kid but all you used to do was push the blank out of a fired shell and ream it out a bit with the awl on a swiss army knife, then in goes a 22lr round. They fire but can't be aimed for ****.
