dark whitetail deer!!

was hunting today and had two 140 class whitetail deer fighting 75 yards away from me!! Had nearly the same 5x5 racks and body size but 1 deer was choclate brown even his horns were darker!! the top of his back was almost black! I have hunted this area for 15 years and taken many large whitetails around the area and have never seeen anything like it!! Probably should have shot him hey!! anybody seen this before!!

I harvested a buck last week in 248 and as soon as i seen him i thought he was a little darker than most bucks i have been seeing! His antlers are not dark and maybe he isn't as dark as the one you are describing but i had to shoot him! He grosses rite around 165. I would also like to know why some deer are much darker than others and why some have choclate antlers while other have white antlers! Sounds like the deer was a shooter though! Should have wacked him!

Really think I should have shot this deer as well but, I am holding out for a huge 6x6 called him in twice this week but he is only moving at dark! still early in the season but in a couple weeks he will not be so lucky!!

How about this deer taken in the midwest US. Black or melanistic deer are extremely rare.

IMO... reason deer have either a light-colored or dark-chocolate rack has everything to do with what their rubbin' on. Them dark-horned bucks are probably scratchin' on pines or willows... the light ones, you guessed it... probably poplars

saw this deer again tonite chasing the crap outa 2 does it seems he won the fight, i called him within 40 yards until it was to dark to see him! On my way back I walked to within 20 yards before he sauntered off! just called my buddy if he stays where he is we will have pictures tommorrow!!
