It's hard to imagine something like this happening at a Humane Society animal shelter. To quote one Inspector; "This isn't just an error. This is unbelievable." . . .

If the accused are found guilty, I hope they see substantial jail time.

According to a recent Globe report; at the Toronto Humane Society animal shelter, more animals died in their cages, than were euthanized between Jan. 1, 2005 and April of 2009.

Investigators allowed reporters to tour the facility today. Some animals where found near death, or alread dead. Many had no food or water, and most cages hadn't been cleaned for days.

These are some of the photos the reporters took. Hang on to your hats, this ain't pretty . . .

I just can't believe this was allowed to happen.

and in Toronto yet.....the centre of the Universe......

Chances are those "top ranking officials" will get the maximum penalty under Ont. law......10 hits with a man-purse.:(

Some animals just have to be put down. That is the way things are. Leaving them to rot is worse than killing them. Someone finally blew the whistle.

I always feel bad for animals like that.......except that tiger that ate Siegfried, or was it Roy????? That tiger had the right idea.

Just hope the tiger didnt get sick :D these officials should get the same treatment as the animals they were supposed to look after.

This also illustrates a point.

Much of the general public wrongly believes that hunters have little or no respect for animals and that is why they can harvest them.

Much of the general public wrongly believes that 'animal protection' agencies and individuals running them love animals and that is why they are involved.

Both are generalizations and stereotypes. All of the people I hunt with and I'm sure many more on this board have a deep appreciation and respect for wildlife, they just also have an understanding of man's place within nature and a mature understanding of nature in general.

Most of the people running and working within animal rescue and protection agencies no doubt have a love for animals but several of these are run for profit. Whether they be an emergency vet office or an animal rescue shelter there are occasionally people involved for their own good only.

Rescue agencies have the occasional person who shouldn't be involved in animal care and hunters have the occasional scumbag poacher but fortunately the majority of both are lawful and well-intentioned.

I know one of the x-employees that used to work there. She has since moved out west here to Alberta. Every time she talks about that place (lots of horror stories), she cries.

I did a little poking around the internet and found this article and imbedded video about a mummified cat the investigators found there; http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/torontohumanesociety/article/732023

Seeing the other links and photos above ... I'd like to get those guys responsible, alone in a room with me. What would happen to them, would not be printable here.

WTF! I just can't begin to imagine what was going on there...

Neither can I!

Whatever had been going on at the Toronto Humane Society shelter, had been going on for quite some time. This is a Globe & Mail article & vid about a dog with a broken leg, that they adopted out to new owners without telling them about the broken leg. The article & vid date back to May of this year - http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/toronto/killing-them-with-kindness/article1160810/

What kind of low-life scum would run an animal shelter like that  ... I'm at a total loss for words.

When I showed my wife all the links, vids, photos, etc., she started to cry. And I have to admit that a tear has come to my eye once or twice while looking into this situation.

The one question that keeps coming up for me is; "Why ... why did they do this to those poor, defenseless animals?"

I am from Guelph about an hours drive from Toronto and the THS has for years had a horrible reputation amongst farmers and hunters and is widely considered more of an animal rights group than humane society. They regularly have informercials on tv with canadian celebrities asking for donations and telling the heroic tales of life saving surgeries on abused animals. All heresay but I have heard that vets don't last because of their policies and expectations. Their commercials show expensive surgeries being performed on skunks and raccoons and other animal rescues.

I have heard that they will not give a hunting dog to a hunter as hunting goes against its morals. They have the audacity to ask for donations in the farm building of the Canadian National Expedition even though they are an organization who is opposed to all animal agriculture.

It is a good thing that they got busted, I have heard other stories of animal rights organizations like PETA finding that their ideals are not practical when they actually are implemented, there is hope for the quiet majority yet.

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

Mahatma Gandhi

If he were alive, what would he say about this world, this country? Let us all be thankful these "animals" were caught before they could do more harm.

Thanks for that ^ Dave. It's always good to get info and feed-back from those that live near the scene of the 'crime'. Please keep us posted about how this all shakes out.

As for your comment about the "quiet majority", perhaps it's time that we not be so quite about such things anymore. I understand that those horrible things at the THS had been happening for a long time. This reminds me of an old quote that I haven't referred to in quite a while; "Evil triumphs when good men (and women) stand by and do nothing".

The question remains ... will they be properly punished???

Seeing pics like these really just makes me sad.

We put down our 12 week old puppy tonight that was rescued from a reserve. He had distemper, and couldn't fight it off.

Can not believe how tough it was, and how attached I was/am to little Diesel. At least he had an opportunity to feel loved, be fed and warm, and not suffer. He was rescued from a reserve, and could have had a fate similar to this place.

I would have thought that a humane society would be just that, a humane place for animals. sick.
