Cordless drill attachment for ice auger, do they work?

From what I've seen, as long as you have a half decent drill they work quite well.

I'm trying to find one of those adapters locally, but I haven't been having any luck.

I think it was Sundancefisher who did a test run last season.
If I remember right...He used a new Ridgid 18 volt and drilled something like 16 or 18 holes on one charge...6 inch auger I would guess, can`t remember how thick the ice was....Whatever it was, it surprised the hell out of me, the amount of holes he drilled

Or I could have my head up my arse, and I imagined the whole thing!:D

The ice was a couple feet thick at least. I think it was badbacks 6 inch auger. I drilled 36 holes if I recall with 2 batteries from my ridgid 18 v cordless.

I have an 18volt mastercraft a couple years old, I have been using with mine on an 8inch auger. Going through 1 foot of ice I dont get too many holes maybe 6 if I bring both batteries and only use low gear. They definetly work but I think I need to upgrade to a 24V drill.

Do you use the drill a lot? If it's a couple years old there's a good chance that the batteries are a little past their prime.

It would still beat grunting it out by hand I would think :)

Man that video settles it for me I think I have a couple of decent drills as well as some metal working equipment in the garage. I have a newer dodge actaully has 150w outlet therefore I could bring the battery charger as well. Just have to find a decent 6-8" auger blade. Worth a shot anyways I don't really have 4-500 to drop on a gas auger.

looks easy enough to build, just a trip to homedepo should do it

Hmmmm,

I'd be willing to TIG a few of those up ! Anyone have detailed photos of those baby's ? Sure beats hauling around a 40+ lb Auger and Gas when on a 'light-weight' fishing trip !

What is the cost on one of those 'decent' Auger Blades ? Anyone know ?

I am thinking my batteries likely are a little past their prime. There is a noticeable difference in one battery than the other. It sure does beat hauling around a heavy gas auger for me as long as I dont plan on drilling holes all day. I will post some pics a little later, after I got it in my hands I realised it would be real easy to make.

neat setup. Only issue I see is that metal piece floating or fixed. There is lots of problems with people getting their hands stuck on the trigger and spinning the auger out of control. I have used these and you just have to back off the trigger when you reach the end of the ice.

I tried out my auger bud today but the 7 year old Rigid 18v NiCd batteries were definitely past their prime. I'd noticed they didn't hold much of a charge for household use over the past year or two. One fully charged battery drilled half a hole, while the second battery managed 4 holes. I was using a 6" auger with new blades.

Overall though I was impressed enough to stop at Home Depot on the way home and buy a new 3 amp hour Lithium Ion battery and charger. That should be good for a day of fishing.
