I purchased one new from the Elwood Epps sight in the remington 673 guide rifle. Been using it for about four years and absolutely love it!
The short little bugger is an absolute pleasure to pack in the bush and it has lots of jam too! 200 gr reloads will consistenly print 1" groups at 100 yds (not such good luck with the 250 gr. though). Not a bad thing to say about it , except that within a year, there were enough guys that didnt like the recoil, that they started showing up in the used section for 300 bucks cheaper! Personally I dont find the recoil bad at all.

i had the same issue..rattling whitetails in heavy cover
so i assembled a ruger frontier in 300wsm, leupold intermediate eyerelief 2.75X mounted half way down the bbl, and limbsaver pad. with the 16" barrel it really shakes the trees. with the short pipe its ballistically the same as a 30-06.
dick284 gave me some 200gr accubonds to build up.
not a pleaseant piece of equipment to fire repeatedly at the range, but hunting it should be fine.

338 Federal in the T3 or laminated Tikka.

358Win in either a Ruger 77 compact, or a Browning BLR in the same. (77 compact no longer made in 358, but some shops still have them)

Brass is a lot easier to find since 308's can be reformed easily.

My buddys brother has killed a pile of game with one, pretty much the same as my 35Whelen, performance wise. I think the whelen handles the 250g bullets a little better, than a short action. Good luck with your choice, but also consider the 338 federal as mentioned, and the Whelen, mine is a pump so if that floats your boat it's something else to consider.
