Went to start my auger the other day before my weekend trip. Well gave it a few pulls, but now the cord won't retract. can anyone explain how I can fix this problem?

Thanks
Mark.

BTW I want to do this myself. not pay shop time.

Be prepared to take it in ..... if the spring explodes outside the housing ...... it's almost impossible to get back in ........ (if it's the type of recoil I have seen before).

Best thing to do, before you start too much "taking apart" is to take it inside, let it warm up and meticulously and carefully try one thing at a time instead of going to "open heart surgery" right away.

Trust me on this one ....... I learned ..... lol

This happened once to me. There is a plastic reel which the pull cord wraps around and also has the spring to wind back in. If you are lucky the spring is still in place but simply slipped out of the little hole of the reel. If this is the case carefully take the reel off, wind up the cord and skip the end of the spring back into the reel. There is probably a more specific way to describe it but this is as technical as I can be. Just take your time pulling it apart take pics with your phone so you can put it back together exactly correct. As far as pulling off the gas tank there should be one nut on top of the outter housing and then two inside the air box under the air cleaner. I hope this is helpful. GregT

Had this happen to me last year. Tried recoiling but at the end of the day the little plastic tab was wore out that holds the spring. A new pull cord and retractor is about 20 bucks. I'd just replace. So much easier.
