Hi All.
Just wondering if anyone has been out to Ghost lake yet this season. Heading out on the weekend, and wondering how much ice is on the lake.

12-15 inches in the places I have checked and people are driving all over the lake already.
Cheers

are you talking about Ghost Reservoir on the 1A or Ghost Lake up north?? And yes I am aware that they wrote Ghost Lake, but the person is from Calgary and that is a hell of a drive. So, I thought I would ask :)

Hey Mayuan.

Yeh, it's actually Ghost Reservoir on the 1A just west of Calgary. Everyone around here just calls it Ghost Lake, so I sometimes forget.
Some nice Lake Trout in it, up to 25 - 30 lbs. Biggest we have landed on the ice is only 10 lbs though. Usually lotsa action for us though.

Sure do!!!
I have ice fishin that lake for better then 20 yrs now. Once you know where to go on the lake, look out.
Most people are fishing fairly deep for the lakers, but we catch them like crazy in about 15 feet of water. We go to the same basic spot year after year.
Last 6 or so years we have been using Aquaview under water cameras. Makes a "HUGE" difference. now we know exactly when the fish are in the area, and can watch to see just what kinda action the want.

Good to hear that you're talking about the Reservoir. I was going to start a post to try and get more info on the Ghost Reservoir. I knew about the 15-20 of water for lakers, same on Spray in the winter. But any hints on where to fish?? I have never fished Ghost in the winter and now I live in the NW and it is a short drive for me. :)

I can tell you that near the boat launch, bridge and pretty much up the whole west side near the parking lot hasn't worked for me

Best place for us is in the cove near Ghost Reservoir Village. Either near the island, or along the edge from the village to the east point (looking south from the village). There is also a good chance of hooking a nice brown in this area. We almost always hook a 5 - 6 pounder at some stage through the winter, especially closer to the island.
We use 1/8 - 3/16 oz jigs, tipped with a minnow, power corn, or yes, even Kraft cheese slices. My friend loves to add the cheese to a stinger hook.
Sounds strange, but works great for us.
We are hoping to head out on Saturday......I can't wait......:)

when you hit ghost and you sound like you do really well gonefishin1966, do you target trout mainly or do you catch other species too? i am trying to target the rocky mountian whitefish through the ice because that is one species i have not ice fished for before and very curious.

Hey Local.
We target the lake trout, but do catch other species. We have caught plenty of burbot and brown trout, and a couple of rockies. The village area has alot of lake whitefish, good size ones too.
We always see quite a few rockies come through. That is probably why the lakers are there.
Most of the people out along the edge near the arking lot are fishing for whitefish, so you could ask them. Most are pretty good.

Wow. This has got to be the first post with positive comments on Ghost.

Does time of day matter much for lakers there?

I hope to target the Burbs there. I have gone a couple times at night just before ice up and done really well. 6lbs was the average the one night. Heard of some in the 12lb and bigger range. That would be a fight!

The bay is not the best spot for lakers and burbs IMO... the islands about 1km past the bay is where the real action starts... get off one in the 15-20' range and start drinking.

Time of the day does seem to make a difference for us. We prefer to be on the lake and fishing by first light. We don't usually stay much past 2-3pm.
We have been near the islands, and where we currently fish. We have found that there may be more lakers near the island, but they tend to be bigger where we are. I guess it all depends on quality or quantity.......we are going for quality......

I have met many, many people who either don't like or have had no luck at Ghost. All I can say is that we rarely go anywhere else in the winter. We seem to do pretty well.
