View Full Version : Official Gulll Lake Gathering 2010
Ok its official date will be Feb 6th 2010 on Gull Lake , Brownlows Landing. Below you will find a map of directions and a list of members who have said they will attend thus far. It will be a pot luck lunch for all attending a food list will be posted in due time. Anyone wishing to bring something please post along with your intentions to attend , I will update attendance and food list from time to time along the way. I believe myself and a few other members are looking to get some accommodations and spend the night with a few cold ones , a few cigars and maybe a game of pokers as well , I am sure there will be a few tall tales about the one that got away. We are looking for a cabin of some sort any information on such would be great. Then we can fish the Sunday as well. Hope to see you all out there.....

OK lets all start thinking about what we are going to contribute to the pot luck. I believe WalleyDietz is going to bring his big ass tent , some of you will know it from last years pot luck on Chain. It will serve a s a great place for the meal to be served as well as a gathering place out of the elements with the stove in it. So put on your thinking caps and come up with a meal idea. I will be bringing bunch of fireworks for Sat night , if someone can provide a connection for firewood that would be great. If anyone has some tables for serving food on it sure would help. I thank you all for getting involved with this and am sure it will be a great time.

If wanted i can bring out a couple of boxes of really good burgers, as well. Anyone going to have a big ***** bbq to cook on? Wish I still had my barrel one...:(
Dougie55
01-10-2010, 12:17 PM
I will probably go out on the Friday, and try for some perch towards the north side (depending on snow and such), so what would be a good time to meet up on the south end, on Sat? Would be glad to add what assistance I can in setting up stuff there.
Kajijji has one fire pit on one side and bbq on the other 45 gallon drum I think wants 40 bucks for it. Was thinking of buyn it , are they a good set up? And I am sure there will be a BBQ there even if its a little camp one.
Dougie55

Sounds like a set up I used to have.. Worked like a charm...Can use wood or charcoal in the bbq side. I too will be bringing my portable propane bbq. I would look at it myself, but have no garage now to store things like that in..:(

Pike, perch and whitefish. If your unlucky you can pick up a ling or two.
Bring a tipup or two for pike, smelts or whatever you use.
For whitefish you need to site fish for them. A tent is a must. Wireworms are the best in this lake. Bring yellow, oranges, reds. I typically only use yellow.
The perch are funny in this lake. I have never found a school of them in deep water. Only a few cruising in about 8-15' of water. Decent sizes, most I have caught are 8-12 inches. Use your typical perch jig with a maggot or perch eye.
I have never fished brownlows. I find it more crowded then up the west side.

Hey BBJ some of those worms you are doing yellow? :D have to buy some from you I guess.
I will update the guest and food list on sat night as I am in Moose Jaw Sask right now doing some family stuff. Thinking of doing some fishing down here this weekend Defenbaker Lake or Long Lake I think.

Alright, I will do my best, so add me to the list!! I will bring out my daughter (maybe both) with me. I will also bring out some mule deer pepperoni, and try to bring some mulie burgers!!
If anything else is needed of me let me know.
Gonna be a great day of fishing.

01-14-2010, 11:41 AM
I for one am STOKED for this trip!! I will bring my shack, and Twotwelve guy will bring his Ice Cube. Just curious to know how the cabin thing is working out? I will pitch in for a cabin to stay at with some other board members, most certainly going to be a good time!
Jeff, thanks again for getting this together. Please let me know what I can do to help you out for arrangements. I can bring my charcoal BBQ, but it only fits about 12 burgers at a time, some of you might remember it from the PCR gathering. I can also bring my turkey deep fryer, so we should also get a fish fry organized during the day! I will bring the oil, fryer and frying tools - anyone is welcome to bring their homemade batter mixes or whatever else they would like to fry up - it's open for anyone and everyone to use.
I should also be able to build up a firepit here in my shop. I will get to work on it right away, and will keep this thread posted on any further developments.
Thanks again, if I can be of any help to anyone, or if you are interested in sharing a cabin, send me a PM!

Alex K: I'll call when it gets closer. You can catch a ride if you don't want to drive on..

Its been soo nice here in Sask , I have not heard a pink fishing rod or a bad wife joke in over a week. :tongue2: Just remember I dont have to get you body down the hole just hold your face in it with my boot...... Besides you old birds know I make you look good. Hope 2 see you guys out there.
Hey I never said your wife was bad - reflecting back I think your wife is pretty darn good
For the pink fishing rod - well..... if the shoe fits buddy... maybe you could catch more fish with it ( it was built for a lady and they seem to be catching all the fish lately - right WAYNE )
I'm never worried about the holes in the ice - Some 6's mostly 8's , I drill 9's, seen some 10's but my head is wayyyyy to swollen from my ego to fit in any of those
The real reason you make us look good is because we can catch more fish than you ( pink rod or not ):lol:

I should be able to help you out with a ride.
It looks like I might have a full truck now. Momma and the chitlens will probably join me if the weather is nice. We will visit my brother in Rimbey and make a weekend out of it. They are fair weather fishers but I would hate to leave you stranded with little notice.
You might want to find other travel arrangements for now, and if anything changes with their plans I will let you know. Sorry. :ashamed:

Lacombe, Bentley, Sylvan, Rimbey, Red Deer. All within 30 minutes.
I have found few places on Gull and close by. Take a look and let me know. Thought we could fish Gull Sat and maybe do Sylvan an Sunday if the cabin works out to be on Sylvan Let me know what you guys think. Some are up to 400 a night but sleeps up to 10 peeps. here are a few links..

They all seem to be summer only cabins to me but I couldn't find anything saying otherwise.
I did find one for the winter at http://www.vacationrentals411.com/vacation/25944.html?type=2 in case anyone is interested. We would love to stay overnight but it's harder to find a pet friendly place.
Nope I have called the seond one and they are free for that weekend

WOW! :D I think we should put our heads together and round up a few people and "splurge" on the big one at Sylvan, the last one on Jeffs list. That way we can fish Sylvan on Sunday, and make a little vacation, meeting new friends out of a typical weekend.
If we get a few people together, looks like there is 4 bedrooms and most likely two pullout beds to sleep up to ten people. If we can get ten, it's only 40 bucks for the night, each. A bargain anyway you look at it, for an awesome place like that. Not to mention the poker and pool games in the walkout rec room!
Would be terrific to just walk out onto the ice at Sylvan and fish the next day...
I am in, and I will pay up to $100 to share with other board members. Jeff, let me know man, you arranged it. I think you and your wife should have the master suite, for all your hard work, and putting up with all the accusations of being a pink rod guy
It would be a great place for sure. As for the master suite I dont need it man the wife ain't going to be along on this one. She has her wedding shower that weekend and her stagette the next. So its a batch thing for me. She dont like not being able to come. Poor her she has got to sit around with the gals , get gifts and drink wine Boo Hoo.... So a bottle of Jamison's and a bed is all I need If I get lonely I got Steve to snuggle with.
All of those interested in spending the night and sharing the cost of cabin could you please PM me

Diddnt realize there was a new message going around about this trip. I am still in and can bring the large tent and stove. The stove is great for cooking anything in a pot or frying pan and anyone is welcome to use it. I think I have had around 16 people in there ice fishing before so anyone without a tent is welcome to jam inside.
JEFF - I have never been to this lake and would be more than willing to drive us if you can show me the way.
I would also pitch in for the cabin thing as well...or we could find a way to sleep in the tent but the floor gets a lil wet on the ice with the stove going.
Looking forward to it.

I am going down on Wed or Thurs, and probably not heading back till Mon, but would be happy to do both the lakes in between. Although only have the one big bed in the back, if someone has a sleeping bag, they could probably bunk with me one night if needed. I keep two in the van, but I like it cool when I sleep, so they are not -50 bags.
Should have all the amenities to survive and eat..haha
Bringing 2 tables actually. 1- 6 footer, and 1- 4 footer.
Will have the little bbq and extra camp stove as well as the one in the trailer.
Will also be bringing 5 gal of bottled water, and 5 gal of Edm tap water, if some is needed.
(Plan on making a short trip to a nice small trout lake that is doing well tight now as well)

I think if you just go out and setup in the middle of the bay @ Brownlows, that would be the best option. People can branch out from there if they want to. Should be enough room for everyone if you do that... :)

Another area that might be nice is the point just a bit North of the Brownlow bay. This way you'd be away from all the crowds but close enough that it wouldn't be a hassle if someone wanted to fish with the crowd. the point has some great Jackin too. Just a thought

We plan to come Saturday morning and leave later that day.
For food, we will bring two plates of ginger beef. Or if there is anything extra needed, we are very welcome to bring.
See you guys there.

Another area that might be nice is the point just a bit North of the Brownlow bay. This way you'd be away from all the crowds but close enough that it wouldn't be a hassle if someone wanted to fish with the crowd. the point has some great Jackin too. Just a thought
That would work too, but if people arent willing to drive on, its a long haul over there. I know there is a way to drive around closer to it, but its alot easier to find the bay.

Whatever works best for you all. The Bay is mostly always packed with people and vehicles so get there early and stake your claim. Wayne Christie, are you from Lacombe?

Just wondering if there are any of the peeps that are going to be at the get together that might want to give me a hand videoing some of the going-ons..
I have a Sony HandyCam that is super easy to use, and although I plan on using it a bunch, would like to be able to fish some as well, and would love it if a person or two would be willing to use it as well. Don't care too much about content...hmmm well, clean stuff anyway..haha but would like to cover a lot of the people, food, fish, etc, as I can. Was going to bring the underwater cover, but will pass on that this time.
Thanks a bunch..

What is the best time to be there in the morning? Is 9am okay, or would we want to be there earlier to get a decent spot? Is there a map to Brownlows yet? I'm a little confused about where it is.
It looks like hubby and I will be there. We'll probably tear down and head back to Calgary around 3:30-4:00 or so.
I'll also be bringing a portable toilet and a privacy shelter to put it in. This toilet doesn't flush . . . it is basically a fancy bucket.

Hello Ron,
No need to worry about getting access to the ice, if you can't make it on in your focus, I will pick you up at shore and drive you out in my truck, if it is too far to walk.
Wings sound great! Just a thought; I will have my deep fryer out there, so if you would like to cook them on the ice, you are certainly welcome to.

Yup, thats the road. Once you turn off of Hwy 12 at the Brownlows Landing sign, you just keep going straight until you hit the lake. There isn't much of a parking spot on shore, but the trail on the lake should be so packed down that you can easily drive on, even if you just park close to shore.

I am really happy with the response for this gathering. As I have mentioned this is the 6th one I have had the pleasure of doing and they just keep getting better. But best of all is some of the friendships I have had the honor of developing , and I hope to make a few more on this one.
The food list has gotten a little large for me to keep track of , but I am sure it will be a wonderful feast. There will be BBQ's , fire pits , tables ect ect. I will take care of all the eating utensils so no need to worry about bringing any.
As for the location. We will be at BROWNLOWS LANDING below you will find directions. We will be on the ice and set up by 8 "I hope" Just look for the big tent. We are going to take up a lot of realestate so we will try and set up away from the crowds. Steve thought of a great idea and is bringing name tags cause I know I wont remember everyones names.
