Ok went out for some walley at lac. st. anne... catch and release for pike and eye's but still had an ok day pulled 15 eye's 5 small pike 3 small perch and 3 whites... cooked up the whites right on the spot what a great lunch!!:lol::lol:.. well here's my question can a treble hook be to big for a smelt/ minnow.. i was using trebles and wetaskawin specials on my tip ups the pike didnt seem to care when they took the smelt they ran hard... the walleye's on the other hand wouldnt go near the treble hooks they would peck at the bait and that was it.. :tongue2::tongue2:.. i couldnt figure it out i would be using a wire worm and in the other corner of my tent i would have my rod set up just off the bottom...and until i changed my treble to a wataskawin with minnows/ smelts the eye's were more interested in my wire worm... hell i pulled up 5 eye's on my wire worm with no bait 3 of the times the other 2 i had maggots on?? just wondering what you all think

Hey dude , best bet , is Use Jig heads with the Smelt or minnow , Hook it threw the mouth then come out across the back bone where the Dorsil fin is , and have the jig head waiting for the Surprize .

Treble hooks , Implae the smelt threw the belly coming out threw the spine , might wanna do this while smelts are partly frozen or they will fall apart .

Wire worms for Whites and perch .

When im out I useually have a Tip up set up and jigging for perch or whites , but sometimes set up a Tip up and a rod and Jig for Pike , Walleye and Burbot .

Hope this helps .

Heres a couple of pictures I drew up for you .

I have found wireworms to be the most productive walleye lure for me while ice fishing. I have caught at least 10 pike on wireworms this year as well. If i am targeting walleye i've had good luck with a 1/16 or 1/8 jig head tipped with a minnow or smelt head but i've been finding i catch far more walleye when targeting perch and whites with a wireworm tipped with either maggots or a minnow chunk. I find walleye, perch, trout, and whites are less likely to take a treble hook with bait rather than a single hook which is more difficult to see. Pike, they really don't seem to care and eat pretty much anything. Really, a wireworm isn't that different from a bare bait hook.

I know these are other option then you suggested but also good ways of Catching Pike . ITs using a Quick Strike rig .

Awesome! Thanks for the pics and explanations, BBJ.

I can't believe I never figured out figure no. 1 (jig head and smelt) on my own. :o
