Try it you will like it. Ya tie up or buy a fly of the same pattern to match the total amount of people in it. Usually around 10 or 12. Send it to a pre arranged address. The guy in charge seperates them and mails a pattern back of each the other parcipartates. I have lots and lots and lots of flys I do it just because. Ya do get some interesting flys back. Just fun.

Hope ya sign up. Yup like those cutties too.

Funny thing just the other day my wife was saying it was strange that I haven't tied many flies yet this winter. Usually by this time I have about 300 tied and ready for the up and coming season. I had better my tying stuff out and get er done.

We are back to 12 PPL. So I will stop it there. If you haven't PM'd your address yet, please do so.
Is March 11 an OK deadline to have the flies in?
Same thing as last time, when you mail your flies include an extra envelope and return postage (if you want your flies hahaha)
It's easiest to mail them in a standard envelope and since they are all nymphs, we don't have to worry about damage.
You will recieve 1 fly from each person, and one of your own.
THANKS ALL

The 11th should work for me.

Question: How do I know if the beads I'm using have lead in them? Lead isn't indicated on the package. How about the wire? It doesn't indicate lead, either. The hooks I'm using are high-carbon steel.

I'd like to determine if the Zebra Midges I'm working on can be used in National Parks or not.

Hey Dark,
From what I've seen, the package will be lead unless its labelled otherwise.

From the National Park Fishing Regulations:

"Some fishing tackle and baits are not allowed near or within national park waters. (Read the National Parks Act, General Fishing Regulations section).

Help Released Fish Survive
Give a released fish the best chance for survival by following these suggestions:

7. The use of barbless hooks is recommended to make release easier. Hooks can be made barbless by flattening the barb with needle-nosed pliers.
8. Single hooks are recommended to release fish more easily. "

dude I know the words all kinda blur together for you , especially with the new meds, but "recommended" and "required" are two different words. just thought I could be of help. have a great weekend, and say hi to your brother Bud

DarkAisling

but "recommended" and "required" are two different words.

Correct. It is perfectly legal to use barbed hooks in national parks. You do have to buy a license for national parks, provincial licenses won't do.

Question . . . what tippet sizes do you guys use for nymphs?

I'm having a little problem: the eyes on the hooks I'm using are quite small, and I can't seem to prevent the beads from slightly slipping down over them. I've never used this brand of hooks before, and I didn't anticipate this.

I can get a piece of medium wire through them all, but it is really difficult with a couple of them. It could be a challenge to tie these on. Should I switch to a different hook (with a bigger eye), or are you guys okay with getting one fly in the swap that may be a challenge to put on your line?

BlueNorther
02-21-2010, 01:14 PM
By any chance are you putting the bead on backwards? Most beads have a larger opening on one side, the one's I use do. This larger opening should be facing away from the hook eye. If that's not the case you can build up a thread base with your tying thread behind the eye thus not allowing the bead to slip over.

Notagoodtroutfisher: My flies are in the mail today.

DarkAisling
02-21-2010, 01:19 PM
The beads are going on the right way, and they're the the size recommended for the hook. The hooks just have really small eyes, and the small end of the bead is slipping over the eye.

I've tried a thread base on a couple of them, and it has improved it a little. The bead is shifting when I whip finish, so I'll try being a little less aggressive when I do that. :)

Beads come in all different shapes, colors, and patterns. Just look for the ones that are way smaller on one end. I've ended up accidentally buying many beads over the years i had to tie in with thread as both holes were over sized for the eyes on the hook size they were designed for. Just keep a watch next time you pick some up. Often the cheaper ones will not be as well proportioned (such as these ones i finally finished using up this evening that were on clearance, 30 gold beads for $1.00).

And as for your tippet question, i use straight mono or fluorocarbon for nymphing as a lot of rigs can be lost over a day of fishing. I stick to 6 lb for whitefish and small trout while 8 lb for larger trout and more specifically browns.

Dark whats a "toe tag".

It is a little paper tag that goes over the hook on the fly and identifies it. It is BlueNorther's "Diving Caddis" that has the toe tag on it.

It is one of those things that just makes so much sense when you see it.
