Just had a buddy text me that he caught a 6lb jack out at Cow lake. What is the weight to length ratio of Jacks. 6lb = 30". Buddy's not really a fisherman so of course there were no pictures or other measurments just lots of excitement.

Hopefully he put it back..... They have to be 100cm(over 3.5 ft long) to keep..... I haven't seen or heard of anyone catching a keeper out of the lake, as of yet, but who knows. They should grow pretty quick in that lake with all the tiny perch in there.

^ my understanding is that cow is a trophy lake so the limit is 100cm which is 39", dont fish there so I haven't looked at cow lake regs in a couple years so..... lol

the pike in cow lake are suppose to be made into a trophy pike fishery thats why they were introduced and its a 100 cm keep

Cow is 100cm. I would not be suprised to see that size figure get applied to more Alberta lakes in the future. Maybe a good idea.

I'll try answer your question. Caught a 31" pike 8lbs 0oz, 28" 5lb 7oz, 33" 9lb 2oz. So on average pretty close 29" - 30" for 6 lber.

it should not be long before they are legal, there is a ton of feed. I would think that there will be some big fish caught as early as this spring...

I am going to try and master my fly fishing skills on jacks this spring. Hopefully we can start to catch some of those 4 foot pike on the fly:love:

I have a friend who was at Cow Lake on February 16th. He emailed me on the 17th. See below for a synopsis.

"Wow, I took my Dad and my neices husband fishing at Cow lake yesterday. We couldn't find the perch but I caught 3 pike. First one was 57 cm, second one was 118 cm, third was 72 cm and 2 broke me off (12lb test and 18 inch leader) as soon as I set the hook!"

Funny title. For a second I thought there was some mad cow out there somewhere snagging pike outta the waters...somehow:lol:

Anyways....ur buddy or anyone for that matter don't need pics or measurements to be considered a "real fisherman". I take very few pics and catch lotsa huge fish (in the summer:lol:). Pretty sure I am a real fisherman?

As far as length to weight ratio goes, it can vary quite a bit, especially with pike i have found. Imo. I end up guessing alot as to weight too as I am mostly CnR and dont wanna keep me fishies outta the water too long jus for a measurement.

For sure pics n measurements are great, don't get me wrong. Don't need em though. It's the memory that counts, n ur buddy has that. All that really matters:)
Cheers.

I live around rocky, so I am getting pumped for some close spring pike action. Not sure if my 6wt is going to be enough tho, it might be an excuse to grab another rod for the collection:evilgrin:
