question? i had an old truck with a canopy on it so hauling a 16' canoe was no problem just used to throw the canoe over top of the canopy and over the cab of the truck but now i have bought a new truck which has no canopy on it and a 6' box and i am trying to figure out whats the best way to build something to haul the canoe but not scratch the truck ,,,,,,if you can come up with an idea or even a picture of an idea it would be appreciated,,,,,,,,,,,thanks in advance .........DANO

I have seen a few people leave the tailgate closed and put the stern against the tail gate, and the bow over the cab of the truck. Not only does it kill your aerodynamics, but it could present itself dangerous, as the canoe is more likely to break free.

I leave my tailgate closed, and put the stern against the cab of the truck, and the bow on "top" of the tail gate. Tie down to your D rings, over the bottom of the canoe, and you're set. I also tow a tent trailer, and there's plenty of clearance from the bow of the boat, to the top of the trailer.

Hope this helps.

I use my single leg canoe leg. Quality product based on what I've seen elsewhere, and not that much $$

Here's my two cents.

Why not make a a boat stand that can be tug strapped into the truck box but yet can be removed and will double as a boat stand when not in truck.

Hey Dan this is what you want!! The canoeleg!!

Are people sooo secretive about how they put their canoe on their trucks in Ottawa????(reference to Lake X  ) So you had to bother us...eh???

All jokes aside though, are you bringing out the canoe already ??? I know the weather is almost in Spring mode...but don't you think it's too early to talk about sof****er fishing??? Heck we've got atleast another month (hopefully) of ice fishing!

well ya it is early to talk about soft water fishing but i want to be ready so now is the time to get it ready as the ice fishing season is over in a month and there will be a lull in time before soft water fishing,,,,,,, the canoe leg looks like a good idea only problem is i don't want the canoe touching my cab as it's a new truck........and noslack asking anything here on FH is like pulling teeth lake x by road z ,,,,,,over by campground Q ,,,,,,you get my drift........anyways thanks for the ideas people and keep them coming ,,,,,,,,,thanks a million!!

I used foam blocks for a while, but the better option is to get a single bar rack that installs above your doors (either rear quad cab or front doors). You can tie down rock solid tight that way.

I made one out of 2x4s cut to fit in the holes in the sides front and back and ratchet straps to hold canoe down, works great and cheap!!

I like this, but I think I'll make mine a slide in instead of mounted on the box sides. Like someone else said, it could double as a boat rack off the truck too.

Do you have a roof rack. Lots of companys sell boat racks that bolt to factory roof racks. If you have drip rails Thule sells some good racks.
