View Full Version : Ice fishing line spinning on spool?

Recently I have gone ice fishing using berkleys fire line on a metal spool. The reel works fine indoors and in the summer but once it is out in the cold the line seems to just spin on the spool without engaging the drag. My hypothesis is that due to the cold the metal contracts enough that the line becomes just loose enough to spin on the reel... Usually I have used ice fishing rigs with a plastic spool and have not had this problem. Has anyone else had experience with braided line or fire lines acting in this way metal spools during the winter? Is there a soulution?...or would mono line be a better option in this case? Any advise is welcome.

That happens all the time because the fire line is so slippery. You need to take the line off an put a few wraps of mono or a small piece of electrical tape around the spool before putting the fire line back on. I use a double uni knot to tie the mono to the fire line. It works great.

If you use mono it is harder for the fish to see it:)

You can avoid the hassle of mono, electrical tape and so on, just use plain old rubber band that is not too large, two wraps around the spool and then start spooling the braid, guaranteed no more slipping.

Great tips, had this problem before and used these solutions to correct the problems. Another tip is to use a mono or floro leader off the braid. Get the best of both worlds...:)

I usually put a few half hitches with the line on the spool after I tie it on. Doesn't spin after that.

Your line is spinning on your spool .

To correct this .

Take 15 or 20 wraps of Mono line , USe a blood knot to Connect the Mono line to your Fireline , and sinch the tag ends , and clip it and respool as you normally would . This will stop the slipping .

And here is how you tie a Blood knot .

1) Lay the lines parallel and facing in opposite directions and cross the end of one over the other. Wrap this line three or four times around the other and place the end of this line in the crotch or the V formed by the two lines.
2) Do the same with the other line, being sure to pass the end through the loop in the opposite direction to the first line.
3) Slowly pull on the standing ends of the lines to draw the knot together. When the knot is formed, lubricate with saliva and pull the knot up tight.
4) Trim the tag ends off so that they don’t catch in the rod guides.
And a little picture for you .

Put your spool in the freezer for a while and then spool it cold. It is already contracted so there are no problems

I put 2 tiny holes in the center of thespool and tie it off. ive had that problem all too much. nothin like thinkin your pike is comin up easy just to find out it took almost all your line off.then again that is on my plastic reels. on my metal ones i taped them
