A 4 lb test spool of line or my Marmish all depends on the hook.

I just got one recently as a gift,

Marmish all the way.
You have to hand bomb the line as the spool is not for fighting the fish, but perch are easily brought to the ice.

I "lined" mine with Berkly Vanish 6lb flurocarbon, and good thing I did as I had a decent little pike take my hook. Brought him to the ice. Definitely felt the bite on that one.

Cheers!

32" Bro series quick-tip with 4lb fireline. I've used marmishes for 6+ years and this rod is almost as sensitive but I don't have to hand bomb line. Its got awesome power for a perch rod, can handle walleye effectively too. If you can find one, get one.

Good old fashned fingers to feel the light bite.

that was my favorite too, but believe it or not the marmish is even more sensitive, you can even tell when the fish opens its mouth to inhale your bait. especially when your fingers are cold and less sensitive. I was a doubter too til I picked up my marmish.

I use a Marmish for perch, it is very sensitive. You can feel every bite.

Benjamin Moore all the way the Cloverdale ones just plain suck:evilgrin::lol:

I like the marmish if I am fishing light hooks but in deep water I fish chain droppers and in that case I have a nice little rapala rod and a Marcum camera.

I use to like real soft rods for perch and hatchery trout, but since the advent of spring bobber strike indicators, I like using a medium light, I find the stiffer backbone sets hooks better and it cuts down on clutter so the same rod can be used from perch to medium sized stuff.

Would be nice to have to spools so that I could use lighter line for perch.

X2 on the spring bobbers...those little things are handy :)

The last time I was out fishing, I was fishing 2 holes, one with my really light Ice Blue rod, and the other is a stiffer Quantum I think, that wouldn't even budge if there was a perch or little trout on the line. Since I was mostly just watching the rod tips, that stiffer rod would have been almost useless without the spring bober :)

Frabill pan fish popper with spring end.

Advantages...feel every tiny bite.

Disadvantages...you can't reel fish up every time as the spring ices. Still I just use the rod tip to feel bites and hand line them up fast and drop back down and therefore keep the depth constant.

I would say...other than that just using your finger to sense a bite works good when it is not too cold.

Cheers

P.S. I might just have to try some after work fishing today. The jumbo females seem to be eating
