I heard a rumor on another thread that the TransAlta plant's warm water outflow stopped last Sunday. Is this already the permanent closure of the power plant, and the end of open water fishing on Wabamun in the winter, or was this just a temporary shut down? I know that the plant is scheduled to close sometime this year, but I don't know when... any ideas on this?

I was hoping to get out this weekend and later this month for a few more days of stellar pike fishing in before this happened!

Don't know specifically, but I do know that all plants go through a "shutdown" once a year for maintenance. Usually 2 weeks I think...

The Transalta website mentions a unit 4 shutdown in March 2010.

If you read the site it tells you the plant is shutting down, it might not shut down untill the end of the month though. but i think your best bet is to call and ask them.

That certainly sounds permanent!

Has anyone been to Wab in the past 24 hours or so? Is the water still open despite the shutdown?

That certainly sounds permanent!

Wabby has been said to be shutting down permanently for a few years.
Demand for power is too high to shut down I guess so they keep band aiding the plant to keep it running.
Father in law works there quite a bit....I'll have to ask him what's happening.

I work for a company that services the white wood mine and the rumors we hear is at the end of march 2010 the plant is done for so not 100 percent but i would say yeah its more then likely starting its shutdown.

yeah the drag line cant really go any further ... its already at the darwell highway so unless they start moving farmers out and move accross the highway i dont think there will be to much more coal coming out of the ground
