I have not fished it late in the season but, the guys having the best luck are using a depth finder and chasing the fish whereever they appear in the water column. They have been catching them up to 20 feet from the surface even in 120 feet of water. They are using 1 onze jigs and bring several colours. white and yellow are the regular but some use others (pink) to great success. Best of luck

Team
Hope the fishing is good, i would not think that this weather would effect the ice that much it is still below 0 at night.

Although the fishing has slowed the Lake Trout are still being caught. The ice is becoming a concern at the access to the lake. But for now you can still drive on them.

Where were you fishing at?

gramps73

Wow in 2 days I would say that is slow..I am thinking the 5 hour drive might not be worth it..

Truthfully the fishing has dropped off right now. If you want to wait and come up after ice is off they are in the shallows and it is fun fishing. other wise the best time for Ice fishing is early Jan.

Got 5 Friday morning. 14 , 8.5 , and 3 under. How early you goin out ? Good as the sun is coming up , started in 122ft and should have moved out after it slowed. May go tomorrow if a buddy can go , otherwise I'll work around the house before I go back to work.

Started in 125ft at 7:00am and moved only seen 2 others caught on sask side.

Is the fishing jigging all the time or are you setting up dead sticks?

Although the Lake Trout have slowed I'm still managing to catch my fair share. I use a jig and keep it moving throughout the water column.
Hope this helps

Garnet Point and East to the Spruce Trees ( I move around throughout the week). Home made buck-tail jigs (various colors, but white is always a fail safe) with a third of an anchovy.

I just got back late last night. Find 100-130 feet of water and use cold lake tube jigs white in color! You can only buy these at the fishing hole. A guy that works there makes them for cold lake! Tip the jig with a large minnow and send it to the bottom! Once it hits the bottom lift it up about 10 feet and let it free fall back down. Watch your line while it's falling and when the line stops suddenly you have a fish on! We caught roughly 50 trout in 2 days with this technique and lost quite a few. Our biggest was 12 lbs but averaged 9 pounds! Great fishing. Good luck!

I've been using the "Northlands Bionic Bucktail"-Perch colour or also the gray/pink one too.
I put half an anchovie on and let it free fall also or jig close to bottom. About a ft and let it hit the bottom and then bring it up a foot.

Whatever you use, make sure to have a stinger hook on!
Another tip: use a piece of jig tail to hold the minnow on the hook. Always works! Last year I lost more bait then I caught fish, this year caught more than I lost. (only caught about 10 though)

Next question what is the ice like

Walleye101
03-15-2010, 08:53 PM
The ice is very stable. Still 2-3 feet in all the places I went. We had no problems at all. You can drive anywhere on that entire lake even with a car! Stinger hooks are a must but if you buy the specials they come already attached. I put on a piece of elastic band on the hook after the minnow so the minnow doesnt slide off. Works great! Fishing was best between 9am and 1pm for lakers!
