View Full Version : Line types and knots

So the Mono vs. Fluoro thread (http://outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=53412 ) got me thinking again about the different types of line and their properties.

The big one that got me thinking was the fluorocarbon line, and the apparent difficulty in tying knots with it.

So are there certain knots that are better for the different types of line (mono/fluoro/braid)?

I've never used fluoro, but I have reels with mono and braid on them, and I normally use either an improved clinch knot, or trilene knot, and I haven't had one let go yet, though I haven't had any monsters on the line to really test the knots either.

For braid I like the palomar knot. And I've been told it's good for floro as well. When I remember to I like to add just a bit of spit to the knot right before I sinch it tight.

I like the palomar because for me it is very simple and easy to tie, you just have to remember to make your loop big enough to pull your lure/bait through.

This is a good topic! Thanks for bringing it up Geezle.

I'm curious what everyone has to comment on it. But from my newbie experience I've just been using Palomar for both mono and braid. Probably the easiest fishing knot IMO.

Here's an awesome website on fishing knots. Very easy to follow and generally tells you what each knot is used for.

Personally, it's the improved clinch knot for me. Only about 4 - 5 turns on braid though and more spit! 6 - 8 turns on mono or fluoro. Thicker the line, less twists.

Never had a break off unless line was too light for size of fish. :)

Palomar and uni knots are just about all you need. You can use a uni to snell hooks, join any line, tie bobber stops. Palomar is strong and hard to beat. If you only want to learn 2 knots those are the ones.

Oh and by the way, if you don't feel comfortable tying a mono leader to braid or braid to mono (or fluoro) just tie each to a small swivel; as small a swivel as can handle the size of fish you're catching. Unfortunately doesn't work for flyfishing when your tying your fly line to a mono tippet or leader. If in doubt in this case, tie a small loop and tie your leader directly to it with an improved clinched knot. Not as pretty as line to line knot but works just as well.

x2 on the swivel; especially when tying a heavy lb flouro to a braid - the large difference in diamaters can be a real pain in the butt without one

as for knots; i've never had a problem with the trilene knot; flouro or braid - don't forget the spit :)
cheers

Hi BIGBADJOHN

Good post I forgot the surgeons loop

Back to back uni is the same as the blood. You can use the uni to tie a snell also. Very versatile knot.

Triple Surgeons knot is awesome . Is much easier to use then the Blood knot but can be used for the same thing . I prefer the Blood knot myself . I Stick to using a Uni for when Im making Snells . No more buying them things . I found the hooks they used were to Cheep , But with a gamakatsu hook tough to beat that . Gets them every time .:evilgrin::evilgrin:

Albright knot works best for tying line to line, especially heavy Fluoro to Mono

BBJohn, where did you get that Blood Knot diagram????

It is ass backwards. The beauty of a real Blood Knot is that the tag ends are in the middle, therefore the line does not catch on itself (or anything else).

You make a Blood Knot by tying two Clinch knots together.

http://www.flyfishingjacksonhole.com/library/blood_knot.htm

When knotting flouro the knot needs to be tightened IN your mouth, just spitting on it is not enough - it needs to stay saturated at all times while tightening.

It's actually back to back uni's, my favourite for attaching mono to braid.

Here are some good examples of which knots are best suited to different braid line applications. Rick.
